If you think the only people living near the coast who were affected were Jersey playboys with oceanfront vacation mansions, you're mistaken. There were many coastal neighborhoods full of "regular people," as you put it -- working class living in one modest home.

Living by the ocean doesn't automatically mean you're flush with cash.

Wait until the next hurricane takes Huckabuck's castle on the sand and moves it half-way to Cuba. A good hurricane hitting the Republican Florida Gold Coast would be a great time for the northeast and west coast to remind the south that they are already paying too many of the south's bills and the south can take their attitude and run it up their CSA flagpole.

We are one nation and it is time that we act like it. The south, like every other part of the country, doesn't have the resources to survive a major disaster and due to continued lack of action on global warming, we can expect to see more severe storms.

For once I agree with Razorblade, to some extent at least. For those who have government flood insurance (the only kind available as far as I know), sure, help them rebuild. ONCE and out of harm's way. Should they (or anyone else) elect to rebuild in that flood prone location anyway, well, the next time the river floods or a hurricane hits, they're on their own. Period. It doesn't matter if it's prime real estate in New Orleans, New York and New Jersey or homes along any river or stream in the heartland that's prone to flooding.

I have no problem helping out with public infrastructure and maybe even tourisim stuff like the boardwalk. I do have a problem with defraying costs not covered by insurance for those who lived in ocean front property. It was their choice and you play, you pay. Conversely, natural disasters in Arkansas affect regular people not those living high on the hog. Yet we do have those who rebuild in a flood zone after a flood, get flooded out again, ask for money, rebuild, etc. There has to be a limit on government bailing out the undeserving. There is a difference. If Mike Huckabee's Gulf-side home were wiped out by a weather incident, should his insurance company or the tax payer pay? Same difference in New Jersey.

I can see it now. Arkansas, and some other southern states get the bejeebus knocked out of them by several F4-5 tornadoes. We cry for much needed disaster relief to rebuild, the northeast congressional delegation, and others vote, NO!!!

Reason 1: It would add to the deficit.

Reason 2: Wow South! God must really, really, really be pissed with all of you. There's no frickin way we're gonna piss him off by helping you out.

Hopefully, when the next disaster strikes our region the rest of the country won't be as mean spirited as our congresscritters.

I've really been having problems with this issue as it seems to be turning FEMA into another entitlement agency with unpredictable expenses and whimsical funding. The only way I can see to fix this is turn FEMA into an insurance agency funded through taxes or premiums on otherwise uninsurable assets like the NY and NJ transit systems that are getting $16 billion here. State Farm Insurance has a $20 billion reserve to cover claims so building FEMA up to a reserve of around $60 billion should be an initial goal.

Of course the time to have this discussion is not during a major disaster, but most of what Congress does now is to create its own disasters then congratulate itself on "solving" them at the last minute...that and rename post offices.

"63% of GOP Voters Think Republicans in Congress Out of Touch"

Tuesday, January 15, 2013

Most GOP voters continue to believe that congressional Republicans are out of touch with the party base, while Democrats are happier than ever with how their team is performing in Washington, DC.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that just 30% of Likely Republican Voters believe Republicans in Congress have done a good job representing their party’s values over the past several years. Sixty-three percent (63%) of GOP voters think congressional Republicans have lost touch with the party’s base throughout the nation.
