@Beau, sorry I just saw this. To me, a title as lofty as Arkansan of the Year would be the sum of all other Title of the Year awards. When I first read this I didn't know 'newsworthy' was the dominant criteria. Maybe a blurb in the first few paragraphs about what exactly Arkansan of the Year means to the publication would have been helpful in context. I understand the Razorbacks are a dominant slice of the culture and having someone no one has ever heard of on the cover (that has done far more for the state) is not going to make people pick up the publication. Just thought Arkansas Times would see through that in their end of the year awards.

Gee, W. Kentucky can hire him, but we have to fire him? Long was short sighted. Censuring Petrino, cutting his pay, heaping shame and opprobrium on him was ok, but firing him was stupid. Long made a big mistake with this decision and does not deserve an accolade for it.

Let me get this straight: if you fire two embarrassing head coaches (that you hired) and replace them with a third coach that hasn't earned a single win for the program, you will be named "Arkansan of the Year" by the Arkansas Times? Breathtaking.

@sandtrap: Your comment actually underscores why the Times' brass selected Long as Arkansan of the Year and charged me with writing the feature piece. Please don't misinterpret this distinction as "Philanthropist of the Year" or "Humanitarian of the Year" or anything of that stripe. The choice of Long was rooted in the feeling that Long was constantly a newsmaker, for better or worse, because 2012 was a uniquely high-profile year for the Razorback football program that (like it or not) is a substantial slice of the state's culture and economy.

It is worth noting, though, that when Long dismissed Petrino in April, he was roundly embraced by those inside and outside the state for not kicking principles to the curb, which many would see as the epidemic of the win-at-all-costs era of college athletics. As the article states, Long made news in 2012 because he did some things that not a lot of "...athletic...director(s)" would necessarily do.

There is not a single position in this article, humanitarian, charitible, educational, or otherwise that explains why Jeff Long should be Arkansan of the Year. He's an athletic director. Read that again... athletic... director. Time to take a step back and get your priorities straight Arkansas.
