When I discovered the AT blog way back in 1967 I was a cheerleader for the death penalty. Using my simple mind I thought if you're guilty of the crime you can do the time, or gather moss while you roll or watch your pot boil...whatever....

I guess the term is personal growth and I've had me some. I didn't think about wrongful convictions or overzealous prosecution, or mistaken identity, prosecutorial misconduct, evidence tampering and on and on. And I didn't think about adults with low IQs bordering and something below the line used to judge mental retardation. Then you have adults who were unwanted children...abused, molested, beaten, tortured and on and on.

Yes there are severely guilty people but despite what we see in the movies there's always more to the story.....anyway my opinion of the death penalty has changed and rather than take the chance of killing an innocent person I'd gladly back Gov. Beebe if he'd try to do away with the Arkansas death penalty. I'm ashamed that I spent more than half my life cheering on the executioners. Ain't something to cheer for.

And Razor, I wouldn't worry your head so much re "beyond a reasonable doubt". We've been executing innocent people since we became a republic lo those many years ago.

Want to control gun violence, put in an express lane (ala Ron White). While they are at it, bring back old smokey (the electric chair), public hanging and the firing squad for gun violence. I know this will upset some and I am not trying to be a smart butt. The death penalty is a deterrent. An eye for an eye and it will make some think twice before taking other lives. Kill a child during a sex crime, death. Kill mutiple people, death. Kill someone while committing a crime, death. Of course "beyond a reasonable doubt" comes into play.

Beebe says he has no political aspirations after this term. There is no reason he can't put his principles forward and do the progressive, civilized thing here. Arkansas would be the among the first half of the US states to abolish this unconscionable punishment, and would join the rest of the industrialized world. Wouldn't it be nice to be on the cutting edge of positive social reform for a change?

If you're for public spectacle as a deterrent, why not hang, draw and quarter some Goldman Sachs executives? Do you think that would stop Wall Street?

Put repeal in the package, Gov. Put your walk with your talk!
