It seems to me that what we're talking about is not segregation by race, but by class. Charter schools allow further separation of the middle and lower classes, regardless of race. People of means don't want to associate with people of less means, regardless of the color of their skin. IMHO, that does not bode well for our society as a whole. It's leading to a persistent and progressive balkanization of our culture, where people of different classes have no experience of the lives, interests, needs, concerns, etc. of those of a different socio-economic strata.

How can we come together to solve our common problems when we don't even associate with each other enough to identify anything we have in common?
