I would definitely look at non-lethal forms of protection first, then drill the teachers on how to lock down and lock their classroom door.

As for security officers? Why not just have the local Police force station a police car next to each elementary between 7:30am - 9:30am? Most banks receive police drive bys every morning already looking for Ok signals. Why do we protect our banks more then our schools?
