Hubby and I recently had a late lunch at the Oark General Store in Oark. We were the only ones there at the time so we had a great time visiting with the young owners, Brian and Reagan Eisele. Our cheeseburgers and fries were delicious as was the blueberry pie. Yes, it is out of the way. However, that's one of the fun things about it. I highly encourage you to make the trip.

Michael, yes it was gross. Maybe that, combined with our disappointment in not getting the degustation colored our view of the meal. Glad you enjoyed the rest of yours.

Kevin, no, but I really thought about it! Mr. Mordy had a bit of work to do, so I had a bit of a lie in, followed by a workout to ward off a bit of the gluttony that was to come!

BTW, lunch was at Old Mill Bread, and in case you didn't already know, you should stick to the bread. I mean, since it's in the name and everything. Had the chicken salad salad (a scoop of chicken salad on top of salad greens). Chicken salad was alright, but it was all iceberg lettuce, and not well cut up either. A little baby spinach or mixed greens would have improved it greatly. The cookie pretty much made up for it, though.

Dan, I was at the Green Store on Saturday. I know I'm not going to get the names of all the samples right, but here's what I remember.

Tried new formulations of their milk chocolate and buttermilk ice creams. The chocolate (which I thought was pretty good to begin with) was excellent - very satisfying to this chocoholic. If you like buttermilk, you'll probably like the buttermilk ice cream, I'm just not that much of a fan. You definitely got the buttermilk "tang."

There was a banana and toffee ice cream, which was good, but I thought both flavors could have come through a little stronger. A coffee ice cream was probably good, if you like coffee, which I don't, so I can't judge that one. I tried it, and it did have a very strong coffee flavor.

Next was a black sesame ice cream, which I thought was tasty, although I almost got more of a blueberry flavor from it. Last was a cherry and gin sorbet, which was excellent. It was like the best cherry snow cone you've ever had - very deep cherry flavor. If it actually had gin in it, we couldn't tell. When I go back back, I'll be hard pressed to choose between the salted caramel (my favorite), chocolate, and the cherry sorbet.

Aside from ice cream, Mr. Mordy and I went to Ashley's on Saturday. Our biggest disappointment was that they have discontinued the chef's degustation. We finally had the funds and the occasion to order it, and it was gone. The server went back to ask the kitchen if they could do it, and they said no. So we settled for the chef's tasting menu. The amuse bouche was a mushroom bread pudding, and it was bland, dry, and room temperature (not sure if that was by design). The rest of the meal was all perfectly cooked, the wine was stellar, and the service was excellent. However, we felt the entire meal lacked...not quite sure how to articulate it...deep flavor, I guess.

The sweetbreads were tender and perfectly fried, but I honestly would not have been able to tell you they were sweetbreads. The flat iron steak was fine, but the accompanying hash browns had a bit too much oil for my taste. Probably my favorite courses were the chargrilled oysters, and the cheese course. I don't want to say it was a bad experience, it just didn't live up to the other times we have been there. We'll give it another shot once the new chef has more time to get the kitchen running his way.

I'm jazzed to see Lemongrass getting so much love. I would count drunken noodles (AKA pad khee mao) as my all-time favorite dish, and Lemongrass' are among of the best of that dish I've ever eaten. My seven year old son is in love with their potstickers. I am likewise happy to see kBird getting a shout out.

I like Star of India, but if I'm in the mood for an Indian buffet, I head over to Taj Mahal. I feel their food has more authentic kick to it, spiced up the way I remember in Chicago and D.C. joints.

Vesuvio Bistro is my pick for the most under-hyped restaurant in the Little Rock area.

Lastly, I found this on the Urbanspoon.com page for Union Bistro, from user "Scott":

'Thanks to all our Union fans but we have Closed as of New Years Day. Look for us again at another location. Thanks!!!!!!'

Went by Mylo again this weekend at the Hillcrest Farmers Market...I'm telling you, you gotta get there early if you want to really sample their selection. Got there around 10 and they were almost completely sold out of everything. Luckily I still snagged one of their fabulous kouign amann, pistachio meringues, and flourless chocolate cake. All divine.

Wondering if anyone here has a report from Loblolly's Spooning event? Wasn't able to make it myself.

Seared duck breast at Ashley's is phenomenal. Easily one of the top dishes I've ever tried. In a meal that was pretty impressive, that duck just stood out from the pack.

Going to give a shout-out to Schlafly beer, too -- been seeing it crop up around town more and more and it's quite drinkable.

And for you chain-lovers out there: the $8.99 lunch special sirloin at Texas Roadhouse ain't half bad. Green beans are excellent.

But I usually drop by Star of India at least once a week, especially when someone has something to celebrate. The food is consistent and tasty, and the management cordial and friendly. And Sammy ALWAYS knows your name.
@nbodd- yes! The catfish is amazing. From what I remember, I thought the breading was actually ground up rice (the idea being to use that instead of cornmeal because its local). Either way, that is my favorite catfish poboy in town. I was trying to be a little better so I sent for the non-fried fish. Can't go bad with either one though. We are certainly lucky to have that gem.

@walker22 - I recently had dinner at CB&G and *almost* ordered the trout; I was torn between the rainbow trout and fried catfish. I asked the server which one to order, and she said the catfish, so I went with it; it was sooo good. They use rice flour, so it's more lightly fried, and it's topped with diced pickled green tomatoes and served with a jalapeño cornbread muffin. I think about that plate of food a lot; I believe I could eat it every day.

I had a really great dinner earlier this week at the Capital Bar and Grill. They had a new (to me) menu item featuring rainbow trout. It was terrific. Beautifully cooked fish atop roasted cauliflower florets, wheat berries and pecans. A bit of watercress was on top of it all. It was really, really good.

I was very impressed with Lemongrass and need to make it over there again sometime (although I am also a fan of kBird, which is in my neighborhood). Mylo Coffee does great coffee, and I tried a shortbread finger cookie which was delicious.
I keep falling in love again and again with the pork sandwich at Craig's BBQ, and only the hot sauce will do. I also recently discovered that there is a pie shop across the street (I only previously knew of Ms. Lena's), and had a great slice of coconut pie that I think was probably 1/4 of a whole pie.
