IMO light/commuter rail is a long way from becoming a reality in NWA. Maybe if we got the Walton boys to finance a large scale PR assault we could get people talking about making it a reality..

Study after study and example after example have shown that attempting to address congestion by adding new road capacity only serves to worsen the very congestion that planners sought to cure in the first place. It's called induced demand. Traffic on 71 and 540 might be partially alleviated in the very short term, but long term this will just gum up the road network with even more cars and make the next 'fix' more expensive. If AHTD truly wants to "improve north-south connectivity and enhance mobility" in NWA then they should take steps that actually do so. Consider investing in transportation modes that give people more freedom to choose how they get around rather than forcing them to spend more and more time in their cars. I can't help but notice from the map that this road project is only about 1/2 a mile from the M&NA rail line on the south end and less than 1/4 mile from it on the north end. I think most people who have looked at the transportation system in NWA agree that commuter rail will probably play a significant role some day. That rail line connects the downtowns of Fayetteville, Springdale, Lowell, and Rogers with a spur heading off toward the Bentonville square and the Home Office, not to mention its regional connections north into Missouri and south to Fort Smith / Van Buren.

Wasting limited resources by building more highways like the one proposed today will just increase the region's reliance on the most expensive, least healthy, most disruptive, and most dangerous mode of transportation while making it more difficult to make investments in resiliency tomorrow. Cars will always be part of a balanced transportation network, but there's no reason for them to be the only option.

what this will do is create a helluva bottleneck at New Hope Road. Then traffic would have to go west about a mile to reach highway 71B. It would be a major improvement for Old Wire Road which is too rough and narrow to be of much use.

About Trammel's riff of 'connectivity for NWA' ,99% of the road will be in Benton County, it will serve to connect north and south ends of the county on the eastern side. I hope they plan to widen and improve New Hope Road.
