Polecat, allow me to educate you. The AR is originally chambered in 5.56mm caliber. That is, indeed, a poor round for hog hunting. Only pisses them off. But, there are plenty of rifles that you would consider 'assualt' weapons that carry a bigger punch. The FN FAL is a .308 rifle, which is more than enough to take hogs. The other thing is, you AR platform is very adaptable. You certainly didn't know that the AR could be barrelled for 7.62x39, 6.8SPC, 50Beaowolf, .338 and 6.5. The slightly larger brother to the AR15 is the AR10, which shoots .308.

Those would be good guns to have for feral hog eradication. In some states they are a pest, and treated like rats because of the widespread damage they cause. Not to mention they are mean, evil and nasty.

"There should be guns carried in churches...probably come in handy during snake handling cause you're not speaking in the proper tongue."

Guns wouldn't be necessary because, if you mess up, the snake bites you, proving you have little faith. If you die from the bite, obviously, you didn't have enough.

I once read a book called "Salvation On Sand Mountain" about the handlers of serpents. They also would sometimes drink poison during the services. At the time, when the book was written, there were only 2 congregations left in the country, one in Alabama and one in West Virginia. It's been a while since I read it but a couple of things were a little surprising to me, things you ordinarily wouldn't consider.

One thing is that most people who did the actual handling brought their own snakes to the service with them. They kept a supply at home and the snakes were actually pets, more or less. They even gave them names. Naturally, they usually took the more docile ones to church with them.

Another thing is that the ritual was probably more dangerous to the snakes than to the handlers. Once everything got ramped up, the brothers and sisters got into a frenzy, speaking in tongues, shouting and dancing. At the height of this frenzy, they would snatch up their snake, waving it around their bodies, holding it up to their faces all while in a trance. Snakes got dropped, stomped on, sometimes thrown into the congregation. A snake was occasionally killed but, more commonly, they suffered dislocations in their spine. That's serious for a snake since they're MOSTLY spine.

But the snakes were indeed poisonous and people did get bit. Rarely, an apostate would die from the bite. That could have something to do with the fact that only 2 congregations were still around. It was an interesting read, the author presented it in a matter-of-fact style and wasn't condescending. He gained the trust of the church elders in order to attend and observe the services and didn't betray them by making fun of them in his book.

That's it Rutrow. It's the same tactic J. Edgar used in the eff bee eye.

He would encourage an FBI trained private citizen to infiltrate certain groups of people, usu disgruntled unemployed laborers, and motivate the unemployed to commit a crime.
Then the eff bee eye would rush in and solve the crime. J. Edgar did it numerous times.
One of his old henchmen who ended his life near Fayetteville retold us tales of instigating crimes for J.Edgar. He wasn't proud of himself and quit after seeing the dupes harassed, losing all their property and sent to prison to glorify the eff bee eye.

I have found that my flame thrower is the most effective protection in close encounters with feral hogs.

Seriously, when you walk up on a hog they generally run the other way at a high rate of speed and your chances of getting off a volley of effective semiautomatic fire is pretty limited. You will rarely see one in the wild unless it is being chased by one of the aforementioned dogs.

Never have known of a hog to attack a human being, but I'm sure it has happened.

From the article on feral hogs: "it is believed the current distribution of feral hogs in Arkansas is a direct result of hog releases by sport hunters."

So it's a circular argument. Hunters need high capacity magazines to control feral hogs that sport hunters released to create a population to provide hunting opportunities for. So we need to allow every gun fetishist in the state to buy an unlimited supply of high fire rate, high capacity gun so that several dozen feral hog hunters can wipe out the nuisance population of feral hogs. Then when the number of feral hogs get so low that hunters cannot find any to kill, we can count on sport hunters to release more to maintain the hunting opportunity.

Yup, when your a shopkeeper during a riot, and watching the neighbors come is large groups, waving bats and knives, you are going to survive only if you have the means of holding off a large mob of people intent on burning your business and hurting you and your family. That means a light rifle, semi-auto, with a large magazine. During the L.A. riots, there were shop keepers who had the means, and they survived, and kept their business. The others that didn't, they were beaten and chased out of their business and watched as their businesses burned.

During these times, it is not like you can trust or count on the cops. One of our wholesale suppliers trusted the cops. They sold us our guns and ammo, and they were across the freeway from Exposition Park. Norma may be familiar with that neighborhood. Not great. During the first two days, the wholesaler had guards on the walls, watching the neighbors across the street watching the guards on the walls. After more than 590 hours open, and guarded, the police came by and told the owner they would take over.

One hours after the cops took over, they left. They never called the owner. The neighbors looted the warehouse, stealing thousands of rounds of ammo, and hundreds of guns. The owner was furious for trusting someone else. He knew, as many do, that during moments like this, there is only one person responsible for keeping your hide intact. That is yourself.

But there are those idiots and asshats who have the one knee jerk reaction to a tragedy, without consideration for real life consequences. Those shop keepers in L.A would have looked at you like a poor, sad fucktard if you told them they didn't need high capacity magazines for self defense.

Wild pigs will gladly charge, kill, and eat someone. Like all large animals, they won't necessarily drop over dead after being shot once. They sometimes travel in packs. Being able to rapidly fire can be important if they sneak up on you.

Incidentally, with the exception of the eating, substitute criminal for pigs and those are all good reasons one may want a semiautomatic rifle with a sizable magazine for self defense.

      ole bait

I understand feral hogs are now complete open season, no limits, no restrictions against waste. Just leave em where they fall and go after the next one.

I suppose anyone that wanted could be sell their guiding services.

My complaint is hog dogs being let loose just to run amuck.

There are conflicts arising between dog runners and landowners like there used to be in the past when deer dogs were allowed.

Hog dogs are not pointers, they pursue and attack. This is causing a lot of ill will. I have heard of hog dogs attacking pets in their own yards. Now a disappearing pet dog, goat or calf is being suspected of loose hog dogs.

I have found country folk to have a bit of conclusion jumping problem. If hog dogs gallavant through a landowner's place and then a pet no longer returns home at night, they are pretty convinced what happened. There is no law support and matters are taken care of other ways.

One of my neighbors' beagle disappeared ane the neighbor started shooting hog dogs that ran across their place. All the other neighbors said just shoot them then dump them and keep quiet about it but the shooter had a practice of dumping the offending dog in the front yard of the offending owner.

I suspect gun play between humans is the next step.

Ask any wildlife biologist, state or federal, how to get rid of feral hogs. They will tell you quickly that trapping is the answer, not shooting. But trapping is not exciting as mentioned earlier.
When more people learn that feral hogs are good eating, maybe the problem will be lessened.
Or maybe Arkansas will follow the road that Texas is using. Can't whip them? Make them game animals with rules and seasons and pay-to-hunt hogs businesses.
I am throwing out discussion points here -- not recommendations.

I am sort of with you. If concealed weapons are ok for a shopping mall, why not a church?

Not because a church is anything special legally but specifically because it is not.

The individual shopping mall or church can opt out with a sign. I then know to visit the mall, church, restaurant, grocery, dentist etc that says no guns allowed.
