Richard, check your history. It's the president's job to bring the two parties together??? So, all a president has to do is say stop it and let's get down to the business of the people. I don't know which alternate reality you happen to live in but you have in a few words simplified very complex dynamics, egos, differing levels of understanding, in some cases, those who refuse to acknowledge facts and valid evidence that supports said facts and go on their merry adrenaline high coupled with extreme emotion. I agree we haven't had a truly working media in some time. There seems to be very, very little inclination to do meaningful in depth investigative journaliam (except Hollywood expose' type stuff). But, the powers that be seem to have concluded that it's what sells, not necessarily what's the best thing to do.

American are rightfully paranoid of government taking away their liberties and freedoms. I don't believe that it is a secret anymore that the mainstream media (90%+) has a very political agenda and they no longer even attempt to hide their disdain for those that disagree with them. So it is an easy thing to believe that there is a conspiracy afoot and the media is complicit in it. The media constantly makes comments (probably intentionally) such as "Flat Earth Society and Fox News" that it only serves to drive people further apart and create a wedge of divisiveness into our society. It's unfair, unhealthy and keeps the country at a bitter standstill.
Our politicians are bitterly divided and this only heightens the conspiracy theorist view of the world. The parties were intentionally set up to oppose each other. It is only the president that can bring these parties together, this lessens and eliminates hate, disagreement and this conspiracy nonsense (not all of a great deal of it). This is why we have a president, to mediate and bring the two parties together. This is how his/her legacy will be written, in 10 years Boehner, Pelosi, Reid and McConnell will only be a footnote in history that will all but be forgotten. On the other hand Obama will be the main character in the chapter and if he does not find a way to bring the country together that chapter will not make for fun reading.
The media could play an important role in bringing the country together but that does not make for good tabloid headlines so they try their best to keep the hate, conspiracies, animosity and division at a very high level. It's a shame that the media can't see what is good about mankind and what is good for mankind, instead they focus on the negative!
