When I went to college, semester tuition (and blessed few fees) amounted to about what my husband made a week at a full time job when we married. Books added another $150 or so, although I managed to do better after I learned a few tricks. My biggest outlay initially was the monthly gas bill to drive back and forth.

Now? I understand tuition and fees alone at UALR are nudging $7,000 a year -- no books included, I'm sure. So compare those costs to tuition and fees per year that amounted to about $500 for my freshman year. At present, an income of perhaps as much as $3,500 a week would be needed get by as I did. So how many families in Arkansas have an annual income ranging from $150,000 to $175,000 or more?

Toss in room and board ($8,000+), a requirement for most UALR freshmen next year, I understand, and you'll need a heck of a lot more cash from some source.

So go to junior college first? Plan on somewhere between $3,000 and $4,000 a year for tuition and fees. Better than $7,000, but still a lick and a heck of a lot more than a few years ago.

So the reason for the ever increasing costs? Mind you, this is largely a guess on my part, but I see an inordinate amount of building going on on the campuses I'm familiar with.

Do I have the answer to affordable higher education? No, not a clue, but someone out there better come up with some ideas because it's going to get worse.

And it's not as simple as you make it... Those White guys of whom you speak have had those feelings since long before Obama was born. Considering the nature of our Republic, by and for the rich.... they have good reason even if they can't articulate it well. As for their behavior... they have and continue to be terribly violent all around the world and at home. Perhaps you should ask yourself why Obama is helping them, taking their old violent ways to new lows? If Obama were white he would be a champion of the white supremacists! Heck, just the fact he deported more latinos in three years than all other presidents combined says so much! Only Obama (or perhaps Hillary) could do that and overwhelming win the latino vote.

If you do not think there are white guys thinking hard about resisting, with violence if necessary, a change in which they lose power to "minorities" then we are living in different states. It is the primary explanation for the frenzy around "OBAMA'S GONNA TAKE MY GUNS." When they say they fear government tyranny, what they mean is they fear a democratically-elected government that doesn't put old white men at the top.

Silver, I read your update on what's the matter with Kansas. Honestly, I don't recognize the state of my birth and many wonderful childhood years. I lived in towns with magical names like Medicine Lodge and Council Groves among others. I had a brief sojourn in Emporia, although I was too young to remember it. Emporia was the home of William Allen White, a Republican. I did not know until I read his wiki entry that he never voted for FDR although he did praise many policies of the New Deal. (I learned to swim in pools built by the CCC or WPA---can't remember which.)

Defending ourselves from this type of tyranny is the true purpose of the Second Amendment -- and why it is clearly more important than the first amendment. A free press can only report these statistics; an armed militia can do something about it.
