Okay, I have an idea... Lets all disagree with a PROFESSIONAL consultant firm, stick this tech park in the most inconvenient place, and then complain about it being unsuccessful and a big waste of money 5 years from now. Hmm, yea that sounds about like Arkansas!

I just moved here from Durham, NC. You ever wonder why they put the RTP right in the middle of Duke, UNC, and NC State? Ever heard of IBM, Cisco, Red Hat, etc? The RTP alone employs over 40,000 highly trained professionals.

I don't think it would be a bad idea to take notes.

If we're going to waste all this money somewhere, let's waste it downtown. The whole concept is doomed anyhow, since we're not really following the models that have proven to be successful. This whole "build it and they will come" nonsense only benefits the builder and the real estate folks. If you want to draw high-tech companies here, then go out and try to draw high-tech companies. Don't build some big bunch of empty buildings and hope someone will find out about them.

Silicon Valley grew organically, with private investment. In fact, Stanford recently took some heat because private industry donated millions and millions to build a new, entrpreneur guided hi-tech R&D facility on campus. Hmmm... Let's compare: a private university concerned about strings attached to a private gift, vs. taxpayer dollars to benefit public institutions being manipulated by unaccountable profiteers.

If the purpose of the tech park is to just give the reasearchers more room, then what you have is just an extension of UAMS and UALR so let them pay for it. Research Triange Park in North Carolina is between three universities but not near any of them. It is near and built around an IBM research facility. Little Rock is too small to have driving time be an issue in any discussion. That is just a smoke screen. It will take a researcher longer to walk to his/her car in that mammmoth parking arrangement than to drive to Benton or Conway. If you want to limit it to just those who are already employed by UAMS or UALR, then don't call it a tech park. Call it a UA tech center and quit lying to the public.

This whole project stinks from the concept through all the high-priced consultants they have hired. The City of Little Rock, if they want to dump more money in it, should start with that $300,00 they gift the Chamber with every year for some imagined services that the state provides for free.

“Tech park consultant Charles Dilks … said none of the commercial areas now under consideration met what he believes is the most important consideration: Proximity to the hospital and university.”

The Village Shopping Center site (3901 S. University Ave.), on the southeast quadrant of the 4Corners intersection of Colonel Glen & University Avenue, is literally across the street from UALR. Perhaps the consultant would care to elaborate on why the proximity criteria were not met (or were not the most important).
outlier, where did Silicon Valley & Austin's tech industries first start at 60 years ago? Near their universities. Little Rock can't compete until we develop our own tech industries which will need the support of UAMS & UALR people. They won't want to leave class drive downtown, check on stuff and drive back to teach another class. Grad students won't want to leave one lab, drive to another and then drive back to the first. Dilks stressed this.

Arkansas Economic Development Commission Director Grant Tennille has missed the point of what the tech park is…. it is not to lure a tech company to Little Rock, but to be an inexpensive location near the sponsoring intuitions of higher learning with space and facilities to allow their researchers, scientist and inventors an opportunity to take their innovations to the marketplace.

It is a chamber boondoggle to put the Tech Park so far from the two universities. If they do put it downtown it will fail due to it being too far to for the researchers, scientist and inventors to easily access it, just as Dilks predicted!
