Of course it's about segregation. At one time the children with learning disabilities were segregated, and the scores were doing fine. Then, in the 90's, they started mainstreaming them to help them start acting "normal" so they would fit in better, and all the sudden the right wingers started screaming about the scores!

Of course they went down. You put in children that have no hope of keeping up, and the scores will go down. That's how it works when you average it all out.

The right wingers have been using that to try to discredit the public schools and push segregation again.

You know, like how they drove up the debt to try to use that as an excuse to take the pooled wealth the working people have put into programs like Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and others from the working people to give to the wealthy by privatizing them.

It's all a scam, run by con people who will never be happy until they have it all and are aristocrats, with the rest of us as slaves.

Doc - you are not suppose to say things like that. Shhh! We as progressive liberals need to be unified on all fronts. Saying or implying anything along the lines of segregation (no matter how weak) - either directly or even in this case very indirectly is not good.

Gotta make all those white families send their shiny white kids go to school with African Americans. One day soon we will take over their safe havens of Cabot and Bryant.

Remember when the white kids do well in the classroom - the teacher cuts them off and has them become a teacher for the black kids so they can learn. Forget about challenging the white kids any further.....heck they have it too good already just by being white. The result of this is levelized test scores where the whites and blacks begin to level out (or when the white kids come down) to the black kids scores.....oops the secret is out.....gosh!
Well, we certainly need more "segregation academies" paid for by the taxpayers. With the current right wing GOTP SCOTUS, there is no concern about being called out on it by the courts. Not much different from 1957 except that all of those who are disadvantaged are left behind along with the special ed and most of the single parent familes because they don't have the wherewithall to be able to drive their kids to these gated castles of corporate wisdom.

Maybe we need a discrimination lawsuit by someone with a special ed child and a good lawyer to require these private campuses to modify and adjust their facility to include any child that wants to go. You take taxpayer money, you lose your ability to pick and choose. They should be forced to keep every child they accept and not have the right to kick them out and force their problems back on the public school system. You take the "public" money, you too are "public".

I love public schools. And I understand the controversy over having charter schools run by private business.

Although many proponents of these schools say it's based on school "choice" (they're all about "choice" until it comes to women's rights) what many of them don't get is this: as with all things in the US, small private schools will be bought up by large corporations until just 4 or 5 corporations control all schools in the country. And, that will be the end of school choice and critical thinking in this country. Plutocracy 1, you and me 0.

But I'm not sure the fight will be won by us. There's too much money, fueling too much propaganda made anger, and monied connections where it counts.

I feel this struggle is really about getting one of the last chunks of money from the American middle class. I think it's pretty much over for our middle class anyway--these large multinational corporations have discovered India and China and other nations who are now becoming more middle class. And their middle classes will dwarf the buying power of the American middle class, so why they bother with us? They'll take as much wealth (they've gotten nearly all of it) from us as they can and move on to China, India and other countries. That's what uncontrolled capitalism does.

So I often think it's over--they've bought it all up, schools, politicians and all. Still I guess we should fight it if we can.

Take a look at the figures, terry b. This is what I and I suspect many latinos if they knew would call egregious.

http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/st…

*****
According to current figures from Immigration and Customs Enforcement -- the federal agency responsible for deportations -- Obama has removed 1.4 million people during his 42 months in office so far. Technically, that's fewer than under George W. Bush, whose cumulative total was 2 million. But Bush’s number covers eight full years, which doesn’t allow an apples-to-apples comparison.

If you instead compare the two presidents’ monthly averages, it works out to 32,886 for Obama and 20,964 for Bush, putting Obama clearly in the lead. Bill Clinton is far behind with 869,676 total and 9,059 per month. All previous occupants of the White House going back to 1892 fell well short of the level of the three most recent presidents.

We wondered whether there might have been a surge of undocumented immigrants that explained the increase, but there wasn’t. During the first two years of Obama’s tenure, the Pew Hispanic Center estimated the illegal immigrant population nationwide at 11.2 million, compared to an average during Bush’s eight-year tenure of 10.6 million. And illegal immigration actually peaked late in Bush’s second term, at which point the recession hit and the numbers declined under Obama. Such patterns do not explain the 57 percent bump in monthly deportations that we found under Obama.
*******

Jeb and Romney R's held back somewhat for now... but the latino numbers won't allow it much longer... especially if latino's wake up. The r's seem far more willing and capable or at least aware of the need for pivoting than D's, who still only pivot rightward these days.
Yes, Eureka Springs, Democrats are 'far more egregious' than Republicans regarding 'latinos.' That's why those voters tended to support Democrats I guess. At least you got in another false equivalency post, but you forgot to mention drones.

I'll say this for the Jeb republicans and the latino vote. If I were latino I would be ardently supporting Jeb. Republicans say awful things about latinos, but Democrats actions are far more egregious.

And the D party platform is now entirely aligned with and owned by proponents of privitization of public schools. All the whining about republicans without any scrutiny of D's by D's is oh so predictable and hypocritical.

Follow the money which funds both false sides... on everything AR Blog has posted about this and every morning... "ethics" "drug testing" "charter schools."

Well, more of MY usual. As I noted previously, the LAST thing these people want is real education. The LAST thing they want is people learning how to think. Especially think for themselves.

So, one more time.

It's anything but adorable, watching billionaire conservatives like the Waltons and Kochs steamroller Americans' long-standing entitlement to public education.

In addition to sucking at the teat of government funding (much derided, supposedly, by the GOP) for private goals, there is the inherent (though denied) and underlying racism and classism: i.e., private education for the best off, best connected, brightest and lightest pigmented . . . leaving everybody else to fend for themselves and fight over whatever resources remain.

More subtle is the conservative billionaire's agenda of controlling education and shaping young minds like the Thought Police they are.

Ultimately, among other things, that means furthering a subservient, obedient unquestioning mentality that accompanies religious conformity (creationism, rejection of scientific and medical training for stem-cell research, abortion, sex education, family-planning, etc.) and the creation of a dependent and docile working class who will work for minimal benefits and low wages for employers like WalMart--and think they're happy!

Other countries, meanwhile, continue leapfrogging over America in terms of educational achievements on the global stage, as we become a nation of stock clerks and greeters.

Cheers, Alice, David and Charles!

Ditto DBI--Jeb is aiming to join the Club and his home-schooling scam is helping him along. Be interesting to know what input the head of the teacher's union will have. Sure would love to see some of that money flowing to LR schools. I grieve every time I pass one of our public schools with "tin can" classrooms. Those big plans for tech park will go nowhere until we fix our public schools.
