Thanks Whit-that's disappointing though. I have tried the Honduran restaurant so I know where you mean. In LA I had Peruvian that was cooked in woks as the owner was trained in Japanese cooking--man it was good.

Went to Lemongrass with a pretty big group this weekend. The food was still pretty great, but the service was awful. The woman that is the only server I have ever had kept coming to our table and saying she was helping out our server, but we were confused the whole time, because this other "server" had never been to our table. It were there for an extremely long time.

recently sampled several hamburgers. i rank them from most to least delicious:
1. arkansas burger company
2. the box
3. orange
4. cheers

last 2 burgers had from orange were clearly not cooked to order. they were cooked some then baked, very disappointing. also had a substandard burger at cheers - been a while since i ate there and maybe it was just a bad day but burger was way overdone and dry. have been to arkansas burger company several times lately, all delicious.

Tammy, there supposedly is a Peruvian/Mexican restaurant in a strip mall on JFK in North Little Rock, just a couple of blocks north of the Honduran restaurant. But when we went there last Friday, the menu only had Mexican items. When we asked for the Peruvian menu, the waitress first told us they had failed to buy any Peruvian food, then confessed the Peruvian cook had quit. I saw later on the internet that had happened previously as well.

The problem with anything at Mamacita's location is the extreme lack of good parking for those who don't want to walk a block or so. (I'm not one of them.) Parking is available after hours at the nearby bank, and one could use the lot of the former Hestand's.

There is no parking further west on Kavanaugh, no side street parking on University at that intersection, so this seems to limit people's desire to stop in.

I wish I nice Indian restaurant would move into the former Hestand's location. There are enough Mexican, Asian, and pizza places nearby.

I'm going to try and rustle up some information on Mamacita's today, seems like a space that would do well. Not quite sure why it appears to struggle so much.

I'd love it if a BBQ place would serve up burnt ends in these parts. I know they are a KC staple but it seems reasonable to think that they'd do well here.

We had excellent meals at two of our favorite locally owned spots this week -- The Pantry and Bossa Nova. We were there for dinner, and Tomas at the Pantry was nice to let my wife order the tilapia that is featured only at lunch. I'd had it at several business lunches and had raved. A large butterflied fillet, pan-sauteed and topped with a large dollop of herbed butter. For $9.99 it's a bargain. She loves spinach so feasted on the accompanying large mound, but I always leave it untouched. The "rustic bowl" (the nightly special) was chunks of tender pork belly (think pork pot roast) served over mashed potatoes. Great comfort food, and a short ton for $12.50. We pulled our fairly regular soup-wine-dessert trick at Bossa Nova, which consistently has the most interesting, flavorful soups in town. The wife's chipotle chicken was very strong; they've got most of their bottles of wine at $25, which was amazing for a White Oak chardonnay from Russian River Valley (think it's about $20 in a liquor store). I can't NOT order the four-layer pie with the amazing nutty crust, and her homemade lemon meringue was world-class. Very good crowd at 8:45 p.m. on a Friday, and service was great as usual.

@Andrea -- I loved Aladdin's chicken kebabs and hummus when I reviewed them awhile back. They do a great marinade plus some good time on the grill for a nice, smoky, tangy flavor. Glad you liked them, I hope more folks will try them out.

I went to Aladdin's (on Reservoir) with my dad today. They make really good Kebabs with the chicken being my favorite. They also have a really interesting eggplant dish made with karshk (Persian fresh cheese) which is more savory than babaganouj. Almost no customers but I'd like the place to survive.

we hit Red Door for dinner last Friday. EXCELLENT service, and everyone in our party of seven thoroughly enjoyed their meals, with particular love for the lobster-crab cake appetizer, the blast-from-the-past Blue Mesa cheese dip, the grass-fed burger, and the filet mignon. I had the vegetable plate with sauteed spinach, white beans, mashed potatoes, and cheese grits, and it was all fantastic but once I tasted those grits I knew next time I'd be getting the bbq shrimp & grits. I want a PLATEFUL of that shit.

The only thing you'll find off I-40 at exit 265 is an old storefront that, from first glance, sells not much more than bait and snacks. Stop in, though. Turns out Kitchens Corner Store and Grocery has been around in one form or another since 1905. Same family has owned the place over the past 75 years Pancakes are huge and burgers are righteous. It sits on Highway 70 at Highway 79, and registers a Heth address.

We finally made the trip out to Jones' BBQ in Marianna this past weekend. It certainly deserves its James Beard American Classics award. I won't extol all the virtues of place, as that's been done here (see http://www.arktimes.com/EatArkansas/archiv…), but I will say that I've never come so close to nirvana with unsauced meat and store-bought white bread. The latter element being what it is, it is easy to put away several of the things, so be mindful. Not that your wallet will notice the imposition. And do get it with the slaw; it's all the tang you need.

We ate at The Box yesterday. I'd eaten there before since moving into the new 7th street location, but did not take a picture. This time I did.

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll307/h…

The burger is really solid. It's piled high with the usual vegetables, including an entire slice of onion, which is how I like it. It comes with salad dressing instead of mayo, so it's slightly tangy. The meat is seasoned, but I'm not sure exactly with what. It's a nice robust flavor, maybe similar to Bobby's Cafe but not quite as well executed. The bun is the usual soft roll, nothing special. Altogether it was delicious, and I would've eaten two if they'd plopped another one down on my table.

The fries are also worth writing home about. They're lightly dusted with spice, shortish and well fried, and some of the pieces almost taste more like potato chips than fries. They aren't quite as good as The Root's fries, but that's not really surprising.

The service is very friendly and very fast. They have a hybrid sort of system where you come in and sit wherever you want, and servers take your order and get your drinks, but the drink fountains are accessible to everyone, and the servers drop the check after only a few minutes. So if it's not particularly busy, it feels like a regular sit down restaurant. But if it is busy, or you're in a hurry, you're not dependent on flagging down a server to get what you need or leave.

The Box is certainly worth a visit. And considering their accessibility and taste, worth quite a few.
