Bill Halter beat a flyweight! If that. And he rode, did he not (OR am I getting my election years confused) the regressive lottery amendment into office?

Speaking of "liberal", his lottery support oughta insulate him from that charge. There is nothing more regressive than bread and circuses for the masses which they themselves, at least the "least of these" of whom Jesus the Christ spoke, can pay for in the vain hopes of hitting a one in 10 million shot---and, thereby (statistics show higher levels of lottery purchases in the poor counties, especially the black areas), voila, magically, we avoid raising taxes on the middle class and wealthy, impose a "voluntary" (tell that to the addicted and gullible poor who spend their children's food monies chasing this fools' gold) tax on the poor to benefit the middle class and even the wealthy by giving their kids "scholarships" not based on need but on what---that they deserve to lower their tuition more than the poor children need to eat?

Immoral! Regressive! NOT liberal! Simply a cold and heartless Faustian bargain with the moneyed interests, especially out-of-state Big Gambling, to sucker the poor. A scam. A con. If our governmental officials were not doing it and if the electorate had not, even though brainwashed (which is not hard to do in our want-something-for-nothing and instant gratification valueless culture), approved this public scam, those who promoted it oughta be in Federal prison---and not aiming for some elective office.

Next time, I will tell you exactly how I feel about the lottery, its exploitation of the poor and disadvantaged, its transfer of wealth to the middle class and rich, and the slickster who promoted it for his own political viability.

I won't pussy-foot around next time, okay? :)

Come to think of it, I think MAYBE I have just solved the ASA! problem! Let's persuade Halter to join the GOP (his actions on exploiting the poor and benefiting the rich make him an eminently salable commodity there) and then take him out with a real Democrat (who? who? who? the uninformed and unwise owl asks?) in the general election.

As I seem to recall, he actually had a shotgun in his hands on some (fake) duck hunt in 2006, and even though he has not thought of hunting since that commercial was shot, he can dust off that old ad and use it to combat the darling of the NRA. Maybe challenge gunslinger ASA!---after some professional training in Dallas, perhaps--- to a clay shooting contest?

And speaking of makeovers in Dallas, only Old Max is old enough to remember, as I do, pore, old, boring Joe Purcell who went to Dallas for a personality make-over.

Think that would work with Halter? Can he be made more humble by professional Texas makeover gurus? If so, I'd advise it. Humility sells; arrogance does not. Warmth sells; coldness does not. Perception of not knowing anything much (or at least begin "open" to others' views) endears; knowing-it-all offputs---bigtime.

Hmmm. Should I sign up as his psychological adviser and save him that Dallas trip?

Least we get all carried away with who is proper royalty in Ark Demo Party and who isn't
it may help to recall that Bill Halter already beat one hard-right Republican in a state wide campaign.
Jackson, 51% of politicians see themselves as very special. The others are the losers who know that someday they will be special again.

And, @Drew Pritt, there are those of us who cannot stand a cold fish: someone who is totally eaten up with himself. Hell, I am a fellow Oxonian, and I SHOULD be his natural ally and supporter---have even thought about trying to meet with him to "read" (I am 100% intuitive) if there is anything but unbridled ambition behind his empty eyes---but I don't think I could endure a lunch with him.

And I am a fairly tolerant, accepting person---except for certain types who really get the hair on the back of my neck arisin'.

Halter has that effect on ordinary people and even natural allies like me. Too ambitious, too narcissistic in spades.

He is just not electable. No way---however much out-of-state monies (and it will HAVE to be out-of-state because Arkies know him) he raises and throws down the gopher hole of his naked self-centered, my-crap-don't-stink campaign to fool folks.

Problem is: I cannot, despite being (in 1969-70) a former Research Director of the Arkansas GOP (under liberal Republican Governor Winthrop Rockefeller) and the Chairman of the Arkansas GOP's Platform Committee in 1974 (writing a platform so liberal that even the Arkansas Gazette endorsed it) and despite believing in the need for a two-party system in Arkansas, bring myself to support a Bob Jones University clone like ASA! No way.

Quite frankly, Dustin McDaniels was my candidate of choice---despite my being quite blunt with him on here and on my Facebook pages, urging him to do what is best for HIM: withdraw from the race. He is, methinks, a good and decent, not perfect (who of us is?), man; he is young; and let me be the first to say that if he puts his life and house in order I will strongly support him, contribute to him, raise money for him in 2018 when ASA! needs to be taken out before he and his Republican troglodyte Neanderthals in the Legislature ruin the entire dad-blamed state!

Caveat: My support means nothing if and when "other shoes" (NO! not other women, but shoes of the same woman) drop, something that I am working to see that does not happen. However, as Max knows, her husband, Dr. Fred Day, a good man but an angry and bitter one---a man scorned, just like a woman, is nothing to laugh at) has been sending out (something he denies and blames on others) scurrilous emails, most breaching attorney-client privilege between Andi Davis and her attorney, Jeff Rosenzweig, each obtained illegally and in violation of Ms. Davis' privacy and in (possible) violation of Federal law, and each with a dollop of salacious or come-hither photos that no one wants to see.

Fred's a loose cannon right now--and I suspect he is really why Dustin got out of the race. Whether all this can, pardon the pun, be put to bed without further damage either to Andi Davis, one of my protegees, or Dustin (whose interests are identical, i.e. stop the media feeding frenzy and do it NOW) is problematical with Dr. Fred Day (or some unknown other, per him) being so off the reservation.

So who is left this year? Mike Ross, a Republican in drag? I like Mike, but, really, has he ever met a liberal idea that he liked? Seriously?

Another Republican? Nope. Same Christian Dominionist (Google the term if you really wanna know what the Arkansas, and Garland County, GOP and its elected officials and candidates are all about) ilk who want to impose "Biblical laws" on all reprobates and sinners like ME: and in their book, you agree with them totally, or you ARE a reprobate, a sinner, and much worse!

Another Democrat? Who? Don't know.

Jim Clark is correct. Aside from Bill Halter's liberalism, and make no mistake I believe a liberal Dem can win in Arkansas, Halter is hurt by the fact many Democrats who are active in the state just don't like him. There's a group of us who started disliking him when he attacked Mike Beebe and tried to catapult himself into the Governor's race in 2006. There's a group who never will forgive him for staying silent and sitting on his hands after Blanche Lincoln defeated him fair and square in a primary. There's a group who are insulted by the way he tried to use Bill Clinton's name to get elected in the first place. Too many groups dislike him. And we are the ones who make the calls, go door to door, donate, and most of all, LIVE IN THIS STATE. If Bill Halter does rally outside help, it will alienate him even more. But since he has property in California, maybe he should run there instead, since that's where he was before he came back to Arkansas to run for Lt. Governor. And where has Halter been since he lost in 2010? Not helping Democrats get elected is one place!!

I am afraid that Dustin was probably the only Democrat who could beat Asa in this conservative state. Halter is perceived as much too liberal to ever win an election in Arkansas against conservative candidates such as Asa. I am sad that it came to this because I think McDaniel would have been a good governor in the Mike Beebe tradition. I am not hopeful about the future at this point.

Waxing philosophically, i think it is dispiriting that sexual indiscretions such as we have in this case can end a political career. Some of the greatest leaders in our history had such indiscretions, and they were either unreported or ignored. In this day of "gotcha journalism" and instant news headlines, we will never see those days again. Similarly, we may never see the great leaders that we had before.

If you think that Bill Halter could ever begin to run the campaign that Dustin McDaniel could run against Asa Hutchinson, you are deluding yourself. Bloggers on the Arkansas Blog refuse to accept the fact that Arkansas is a conservative state, and the only Democrats who can win a statewide race are either Blue Dog, or middle-of-the-road Democrats. Halter is not one of these. I'm sorry bloggers, but this is the truth about Arkansas in 2013. I'm looking for another middle-of-the-road Democrat to come along from out of nowhere on a white horse.
