As long as the physical standards are the exact SAME for both males and females then I do not think anyone would have a problem with this. The problem comes when the standards are lower for women to do the exact same job as men.

Have one set of physical fitness/strength standards and if women can pass that then they are qualified but don't have separate standards. Also it is time for females to also sign up for Selective Service when they tun 18...equality and all.

Razor, as a vet I wouldn't want the likes of you covering my back.

And McCain? Getting shot down and being a POW for 5 years makes up for all his other incompetence? Maybe in your lily white world, but not in mine. He continues to show his incompetence (and ass) almost every day. Graduating 5th from the bottom of his Naval academy class set the stage for McCain's entire life.

McCain's accomplishments in life? Being born to an admiral daddy and marrying a filthy rich woman. That's it.

There is a distinct difference between the system pushing a pilot through at a risk to the pilot and the pilot asking for the risk. Pilot error is usually a cause for washing out of a program even if your dad is a four star. I do not agree it is fair but life is not fair and the Golden Rule applies. That is to say Them That Got the Gold Rule. And, just like one Aw Shit wipes out all of your Attaboys, five years in a NVA bamboo cage wiped out all of McCain's crashes. But back on subject, the Navy made allowances for gender to be able to showcase a female carrier pilot and got her killed. The Army is going to do the same thing to place women into key combat positions and it is going to get others killed along with the women. There are many women in the Army who can do much better than a man in some of the courses - no arguement there. But the fact of the matter is unlike Israel, there is no pressing need other than social to place women into some of these units so why take the risk?

Razorblade, the first three McCain mishaps were: 1) letting his airspeed get too low to complete a manuever and crashing into Corpus Christi Bay, 2) flying into power lines in Spain while "clowning" (his word), and 3) crashing a training jet -- all this before he shipped out to Vietnam. Seems to me that those of us not son and grandson of admirals would have been kicked out of the program for any ONE of those mishaps.
Talk about a pilot "pushed through . . . who was not properly trained" . . .

better, thanks for demonstrating that a background check should also be required for those buying a computer, and probably actual military experience before running off at the mouth about a subject you don't have a clue about. The Navy pushed through a female pilot who lost her life needlessly because she was not properly trained to handle the jet she flew off of a carrier. Young McCain was an officer, not enlistee. While I am sure his father (who I had the privilege of working for when he was CINCPAC) being a four star certainly was a consideration in dealing with his son as a flight student, the son neverless went into combat just like any other son, was shot down and spent five years as a POW subject to severe torture leaving him physically impared to this day; however, he refused early release because of who his father was and insisted all others go before him. I was there for the return of every POW that flew into Hickam and he was one of the last. Yep couldn't be better, something you should really be proud about posting.

Tom Cotton completed the U.S. Army Ranger Course which was no easy task. I supported the dessert phase of this course for about 4 years at Dugway, Utah and it really took a special individual to complete it. While I am sure there may be a women or two that could make it through, the PC crowd would force allowances for her gender - just like they did with that Navy pilot who crashed at sea. I have also seen Israeli female combat troops up close and personal and there is a difference between them and American troops. They are defending their homeland while we send our troops to defend other homelands. Therein lies the difference. For those who have not yet figured it out, women are built differently than men. A friend of ours was an Army colonel and she didn't mind squatting to relieve herself when in the field, but she was a Finance Officer. That is significantly different than serving in a Ranger Ballation or with a Seal Team because of where they go, not a quick in and out like the Bin Laden mission, but behind the lines for extended periods. Once a commander has to start making mission assignments because of gender, the unit loses it's edge. Sorry Private Smith, you have to go again out of turn because Private Jones is having her monthly.

Over 200 women were killed in Iraq in their safe, "non-combative" roles. The issue is that there aren't front lines anymore. You don't have the broad frontal assaults of WWI and WWII and thankfully so. The "front" is everywhere and everyone in the area needs tio be trained for combat.

Actually, many jobs that were previously considered to be male only have been being done by females for quite some time. Occasionally there have to be adaptations by the females to take advantage of the fact that their stomachs and legs are the strongest parts of their bodies, so they may need to move differently and possibly carry things differently. Their limbs are often shorter, so they have to arrange things a bit differently too, but they can get the jobs done anyway.

Let us not forget that women deal with pregnancy, a very difficult, painful and dangerous thing to do for most (some die doing it) - carrying around lots more weight 24/7 without being able to put it down and having a fetus feeding off their bodies while doing it. I would think that would show just how sturdy women can be.

This Israeli female soldier fetish is too much, seriously. Get your hand out of your pants.

More to the point, in a volunteer army anyone qualified to fight should be welcomed. And if women are already exposed to combat-hazard levels of risk, they need to be recognized and compensated equally. No brainer.

Except, we're talking 18-25 year old enlisted personnel. Policy set by fat, middle-aged politicians don't mean diddly on the ground. Of course, sexual misconduct is already rampant, even among the officer corps, so that's not really the issue. The issue is why the hell are we still grinding up our poor and desperate youth, come one come all, and pretending it's good for them, that they want be there.

There's nothing more loathesome than a chicken hawk, but I'm conflicted about these educated white guys hyping their service for political gain: thanks for doing your duty, but resume building ain't heroic.
