@ Jack Zibluk: Didn't Shane say he wasn't going to seek the spot as head of the Dept. of Higher Ed. back in September because "the additional time required in the job took time away from his wife, Debbie, who has multiple sclerosis" and that "he and his wife decided that 'new challenges' in that battle were where they need to 'focus our collective energies'"? (Spoiler: I'm quoting from Max's post on 9/9/12)

If being director of that Dept would take too much time away from Debbie, what would a campaign and tenure as Governor do?

DBI obviously has read my column. I love how he and at least another blogger attack me. As if what I report changes facts into fiction. It does not.

FACT is Bill Halter has been seen as an outsider who bought his way into office. His campaign staff choices reinforces that position.

No matter how much you attack me, the facts are the facts. The other candidates mentioned are who I have heard mentioned.

John Burkhalter is not so much a recent appointee. He's on the State Highway Commission, is a multi-millionaire, and has been involved with an organization that assists special needs individuals.

I like that profile better than a one tern Lt. Governnor, who moved back to Arkansas from California to run for office, who does not do anything in the state unless he is shilling for a vote.

Until things change, I have my opinion and I have my vote. Neither favors Bill Halter. End of story.

@YossarianMinderbinder, I did not use the lottery as the sole evaluative tool for Halter. If you will re-read my post, you will see that I am, if anything, more disturbed with Halter's personality/attitude/person than with any issue of his, including the lottery. Having said that, however, I find it abhorrent that any liberal can, in the interest of elect-bility, get a free pass from anyone---liberal or conservative---who do not want the poor victimized by regressive taxes/policies. This, to me, is unacceptable.

As I said, I should be his natural constituency, but he offputs me bigtime---and I don't usually react so negatively to any politician. I just don't see him as principled except his one guiding principle: his ambitious, narcissistic, political viability. That is a deal-killer with me---I will even vote for a candidate whose ideology/policies I oppose, but whom I deem principled, than for an unprincipled person who has a political ideology/agenda similar to my own.

Clear enough?

Halter should quit now. I remember that Blanche Lincoln had a bunch of New-York-based union guys who were pushing me to write letters about pro-union-membership legislation that would only alienate most Arkansans. I told them this repeatedly. They just did';t listen. Her out-of-touch advisers helped make a difficult-at-best campaign utterly hopeless. If they had a moderate Republican running, I would have voted for the other candidate on principle.
Now Halter is dong the same thing.
The Democrats REALLY need to look at Shane Broadway. OK, he is a friend of mine. But he is the real deal and a good ol' boy Democrat. He's their best chance in a now-very dubious race.

Cliff, The problem with your over-generalization is that many of the supporters of the lottery were bona fide liberals with strong ties to civil rights, labor and social justice actions, while more often than not, opponents were moralistic conservatives who couldn't give a rat's ass over the plight of the poor.

With 63% of the vote, it was obvious that a state lottery was inevitable. The problem was to make the resulting system as fair as possible, if at all possible. Try to imagine the structure of the lottery if teapublicans had shaped it.

Therefore, using lottery support as the sole tool to evaluate any politician's liberal or conservative credentials is bogus to the highest degree and puts you in the Pritt category of political analysts.

From another of Vintage Max's delightful threads this is, but may I weigh in on Bill Halter here with my perceptions and observations?

Halter beat a flyweight! If that. And he rode, did he not (OR am I getting my election years confused) the regressive lottery amendment into office?

Speaking of "liberal", his lottery support oughta insulate him from that charge. There is nothing more regressive than bread and circuses for the masses which they themselves, at least the "least of these" of whom Jesus the Christ spoke, can pay for in the vain hopes of hitting a one in 10 million shot---and, thereby (statistics show higher levels of lottery purchases in the poor counties, especially the black areas), voila, magically, we avoid raising taxes on the middle class and wealthy, impose a "voluntary" (tell that to the addicted and gullible poor who spend their children's food monies chasing this fools' gold) tax on the poor to benefit the middle class and even the wealthy by giving their kids "scholarships" not based on need but on what---that they deserve to lower their tuition more than the poor children need to eat?

Immoral! Regressive! NOT liberal! Simply a cold and heartless Faustian bargain with the moneyed interests, especially out-of-state Big Gambling, to sucker the poor. A scam. A con. If our governmental officials were not doing it and if the electorate had not, even though brainwashed (which is not hard to do in our want-something-for-nothing and instant gratification valueless culture), approved this public scam, those who promoted it oughta be in Federal prison---and not aiming for some elective office.

Next time, I will tell you exactly how I feel about the lottery, its exploitation of the poor and disadvantaged, its transfer of wealth to the middle class and rich, and the slickster who promoted it for his own political viability.

I won't pussy-foot around next time, okay? :)

Come to think of it, I think MAYBE I have just solved the ASA! problem! Let's persuade Halter to join the GOP (his actions on exploiting the poor and benefiting the rich make him an eminently salable commodity there) and then take him out with a real Democrat (who? who? who? the uninformed and unwise owl asks?) in the general election.

As I seem to recall, he actually had a shotgun in his hands on some (fake) duck hunt in 2006, and even though he has not thought of hunting since that commercial was shot, he can dust off that old ad and use it to combat the darling of the NRA. Maybe challenge gunslinger ASA!---after some professional training in Dallas, perhaps--- to a clay shooting contest?

And speaking of makeovers in Dallas, only Old Max is old enough to remember, as I do, pore, old, boring Joe Purcell who went to Dallas for a personality make-over.

Think that would work with Halter? Can he be made more humble by professional Texas makeover gurus? If so, I'd advise it. Humility sells; arrogance does not. Warmth sells; coldness does not. Perception of not knowing anything much (or at least begin "open" to others' views) endears; knowing-it-all offputs---bigtime.

Hmmm. Should I sign up as his psychological adviser and save him that Dallas trip?

His overwhelming self proclaimed ties to Obama via his staff choices thus far will hurt him if he doesn't hurry up and roll out some big name Arkies. McDaniel had a lot of support. Halter will need those people. He should reach out to McDaniel. I guess we will all have to wait and see how this unfolds.

John Burkhalter, Vic Snyder, Bruce Maloch, Darrin Williams, yes even Mike Ross or Blanche Lincoln have a lot to offer this state. More so than Asa Hutchinson or Bill Halter. It's still rather early. We are still 1 1/2 years out.

And let's not forget the Republicans still have Gilbert Baker, Sheffield Nelson, Missy Irvin, Davy Carter, all still exploring bids. Curtis Coleman is in the race with a good team in place. ASA! Hutchinson is not a lock not a guarantee and neither is Bill Halter....thank God.

You must read me through an alternate Chely universe. I would say I am the most willing person on these here threads to LOOK at and invite discussion on areas nobody else will (at least for very long).

The last week of pointing out we have a president who murders on a regular basis... undeniable... yet you will hear crickets from all the anti-gun liberals when I point this fact out, asking if we shouldn't, you know, demand he be prosecuted or dawg forbid, Dems should quit supporting madmen. Hell, my years of ardent insistence on health care a s a human right at the proven best costs (single payer or tri-care) and ending a bribe based political electoral system simply belittles your assertions in and of itself.

And I challenge you to name anyone who seeks out or suggests ideas/alternatives more than me 'round these parts. I wish it wasn't so.... but it is.

I don't fall in love with politicians... and the last thing we should do considering Halters empty campaigns of olde and his party of choice is give him or the party or that campaign team any benefit of doubt whatsoever. That goes for any politician. Especially since years into hearing about Halter one cannot even say what he stands for on a single specific issue. This is about him.

How can you so easily agree or disagree with a new slick/teflon candidate... and why are you encouraging others to blindly support based on nothin?

Funny how those who support Bill Halter are adamant and irrational in their defense of him. But Eureka Springs makes a good point.

Bill Halter ran as one who was going to "shake up the system" but he simultaneously claimed ties to Bill Clinton, Wesley Clark among others.

Bill Halter claimed the Arkansas Lottery as his issue, even though he did nothing to advance it before and after it was passed has done nothing to promote it or ensure it's survival.

Bill Halter says he was Social Security Commissioner under Bill Clinton but the facts show he was ACTING Social Security Commissioner starting in January 2001....which makes him under the George W. Bush administration.

Bill Halter claims ties to Arkansas but keeps homes in California and has questionable stock from there.

Too many questions about Halter means a Republican would win. Arkansas Democrats are best to look elsewhere.

Even as ignorant as you claim, surely you know enough about the alternatives to give Halter the benefit of the doubt? Of course that would preclude your status quo of complaint sans solution. Hate to see you being inconsistent.

His campaign against Blanche was bereft of substance to put it politely. Even and perhaps especially in areas where he has experience, such as social security admin... no one tried to pin him down nor did he offer up anything.
DBI you can disparage me all you want. What I spoke is the truth. And Halter has an image problem of being an outsider. This just solidifies that image.

Now the "being quiet and getting his ducks in a row" is not applicable either. Mike Beebe YEARS before running for Governor raised money, campaigned for, and supported other Democrats. He was at the Democratic Party events and maintained friendships and relationships. The same is true of Bill Clinton, Jim Guy Tucker, David Pryor, Mark Pryor....all Democrats who lost but came back to do greater things. Shane Broadway has maintained relationships and "paid his dues" as have so many other potential Dems talked about for Governor.

BILL HALTER HAS NOT.

When Mark Pryor lost to Winston Bryant, he campaigned and encouraged his supporters to back Winston Bryant. When Jim Guy Tucker lost, he still supported the Democratic ticket for EIGHT long years between his 1982 Gubernatorial loss and his 1990 Lt. Governor win. It's the same over and over.

BILL HALTER HAS NOT.

So say all you want about me, but I can back up my "unmedicated claims" as you assert.

There's a key to winning elections and Bill Halter has not realized yet it takes more than buying yourself into the game. Because it's people like myself who make the calls, go door to door, attend the rallies, talk to our friends, get them out to vote. Oh and unlike the Health Care Debate, HOW ARE THE UNIONS GOING TO GET INVOLVED? And why would they against Democrats who HAVE been paying their dues and been on the picket lines and been there for the working men and women.

BILL HALTER HAS NOT.

Facts are facts.
