Perhaps, mag, I made an assumption. Rather that and have a kind thought about someone being clueless than someone actually knowing the consequence of a violent sexual assault and STILL advocating for making women helpless. Now, that would be just detestable, and I cannot fathom how someone would knowingly, especially with knowledge of those grim consequences, advocate for remaining helpless.

I prefer to be kind, and assume your clueless.

As a former member of the UA Student Senate, I can attest to the fact that ASG has long been controlled by and dominated by the white fraternities who unfailingly pushed their conservative politics whenever they put aside, however briefly, their booze and babes. In recent years, some non-frats have made tenuous inroads. Nothing really changed, though.

The ASG does, by and large, represent the interests of the largely conservative student body. I don't have a sense of whether the majority of UA students supports GOP politics but I wouldn't be surprised if there were more student votes for Romney than there were for Obama, although not by many. What's changed since the 1970s, demographically speaking, is the large influx of Texas students -- mostly wealthy kids who couldn't get into UT. This is perhaps the largest pool of white frat boys and sorority sisters, many of whom are in the Walton School of Business, looking to get rich someday (if they aren't already).

These kids are likely to support an "open carry" or similar law if only because their daddies and their political idols are big NRA supporters.

Hardly enlighenment from the Victim Class, but yes, democracy in action. Kinda reminds us of why we are NOT a democracy. It isn't the best ideas, or justice, it is mob rule, and usually the mob follows fear and greed.

You have critters like Dohbert who have some nice anecdotes about wild college times. It happens, every once in a GREAT while. Yet, how many assaults upon young women happen on campus? When I lived in Kali, there was a serious problem at USC, which is in a VERY bad neighborhood, and Glendale Community college, which was an afluent neighborhood. Not much I could do about USC, though I taught my girlfriend how to defend herself. I did start a class at the Community College which had some interesting results. Some of the women were skitish about doing certain things to a human body, even to defend themselves. Most of these women, like some of the parents here, like mag, were clueless about the consequences of surviving a violent sexual assault.

I educated them. I introduced them to women who had been raped, one had been stabbed and left for dead by her college boyfriend. Listening to the experiences of those women woke those girls up from their stupor. I taught them to do what needed doing to remain alive, to live free from fear. They no longer got squeemish when I taught them how to stab and turn and aim for the femoral, or gouge eyes, or break knees. These women did it with resolve. They became enlightened and empowered.

I empowered these women by showing how they could take charge, be aware, be free from fear. They knew they could live one of two ways, clueless, or in fear. I showed them another way. Many of them got into firearms.

Now, we have a group of people who voted to take the power away from women. They removed a personal choice for a women more basic than abortion, the right to choose if you want to defend yourself.

Yup, oh so enlightened.

Hello, enlightenment! Our education dollars are WORKING! A community has decided it would rather NOT have guns in it. I think it is called democracy... Next up is a vote in the ASG. Let us hope the anti-gun votes continue to win. Those are MY children at the UofA and I do NOT want guns on campus. They're campaigning hard against them and so far, excellent win in the first step. Listen up, NRA. These are NOT your constituents and they're of voting age. In the case of my kids, they're also very effective activists.

Sadly, there are many campuses that have "shooting sports" -- whether those are NCAA-sanctioned, I don't know. And I don't know if the UA sponsors such. With the new legislature, I presume it's only a matter of time before open carry is legalized on all college campuses, under the ruse that it's a way to prevent school shootings.

      Easy solution.

Advise students they must all agree on booze OR guns on campus.

Can't have both for obvious reasons.

I strongly suspect they would overwelmingly choose booze.

One can sit in their room and use booze morning noon or night but guns, not so much.
Early one Saturday moring. Drunk with a hangover is asleep. Student laborer is mopping the hallway in the dorm and the wheel on the mop bucket/wringer is squeaking. Annoys the hungover drunk and he shoots the bucket.
Let your imagination wander and see where these two scenarios could lead.
