Any surprise that Dumass would try and use Reagan to justify a bad policy of gun banning.

So, according to Dumass, disarming the Black Panthers was wrong, but we are supposed to like it, now?

That right applied as much to the Panthers as it applies to the rest of us. To resist, you don't need tanks and planes. They help, but a huge, armed populace, most of which may have family in the military, would stymie any large scale military attempt on the People.

The Times can barely go an hour without wailing about how the South is nothing but a bunch of racists and the first instance of racially targeted gun control Dumas comes up with is 1967 California? Couldn't think of anything a little closer to home? The long history of white Southerners disarming blacks doesn't fit the narrative?

guano, There are politicians who cast votes so they will be re-elected. There are politicians who cast votes to enrich themselves. There are politicians who don't know what the hell they are voting on. There are politicians who vote to force everyone else to think as they do. These are the politicians of today.

Woefully missing are the politicians who vote for the good of all, who rise above cowardice, bigotry, political expediency, greed, and ignorance. Where are the politicians who abide by their oath of office?

Incidentally, what terrible calamity has occurred as a result of Dale Bumpers' Panama Canal vote? None.

"...It would be like J. William Fulbright or John L. McClellan voting for the Civil Rights Act of 1964 or the Voting Rights Act of 1965. They didn’t."

True, because it's the vote their constituents wanted. Unlike Dale Bumpers who voted to give away the Panama Canal against the wishes of the majority of his constituents and he dragged Kuneaster Hodges with him. When asked about it, Bumpers reply was, "I know more about this than you do." Arrogance, plain and simple.

Fulbright and McClellan were from an era when elected officials put some stock in doing the bidding of their constituents. Our elected leaders now vote how the Koch brothers of the world or their party leadership tells them to vote, and if they don't they become outcasts and pariahs who have no shot at getting any spot on a select committee, let alone getting any meaningful legislation passed.

And the rank and file? We have no representation. Period. End of story.
