Congrats on the weight loss, Max! I'm doing largely the same thing: Eating more sensibly and walking 5 miles a day. I've dropped 23 out of a hoped-for 100. Go us!

I disagree with genetics being destiny.

My sole evidence is after the death of my mother last fall we have been sorting and sifting through 50 years plus of photographs.

Average size changing over time is glaring.

In my class growing up we had 3 "fat" kids. A girl Lisa, and two guys Paul and Nicky.

Comparing pictures of the band in the 9th grade yearbook of Nicky and Paul (and myself) with the kids currently in high schools today, Paul and Nicky are below average girth.

Lisa would actually be considered slim to most girls in my niece's sorority.

I have read Darwin's books such as Origin of Species and The Voyage of the Beagle and the whole presentation of natural selections would be completely discredited if some how the gene pool across all individuals morphed in a single generation.

Dammit, Max, now I'm gonna have to hit the pizza joint for a beer (and pizza, of course).
Then on to the grocery store for ribs -- got every other possible meat in the freezer but ribs, I think -- and carrot cake makin's. No mix needed if I can lay my hands on my forty-plus year old recipe and find the grater. But ya know, I think I'm gonna scout out that old rum pineapple cake recipe, too, so I better hit the liquor store before I get home. A bottle of wine might be pretty good. Might be midnight before I start gorging, but I'm gonna feel pretty good.
Hmm, wonder if I've got any aspirin, 'cause Tylenol ain't gonna do any good in the morning.

Dunno about Max, Louie, but that stuff is gooood.

Wait, were we talking about weight loss?

“I also upped my activity to about an hour a day of walking . . .”

Splendid. And to keep the walking from becoming boring or a chore, swim or ride a bike a couple times a week.

Was in booming Jonesboro a couple months ago. The local paper reported a big meeting the day before in which parents were raising hell. They were pissed about the new U.S. school lunch regulations and the meals their little darlings were being served.

Why their precious kids were just starving. STARVING! Kids didn’t like all those fruits and vegetables. Hated the whole grains. Were upset about the smaller servings of protein. And, hey, where’s the salt?

The government oughta mind its own bidness and stay outta the school cafeteria. Did you hear me what I said?!

Back in the day, we were forced to wear those gosh-awful blue shorts jumpsuits for PE class. Guess we were more fit than today's kids, yet we didn't have video games + social media to keep us indoors in a chair, drive thrus to gobble down 1000 calorie snacks, and school boards that think fresh air/exercise (and the arts) aren't core education requirements anymore. Like you Max, I've lost lbs by changing my eating habits/portions and am walking more. It works. Have shed and kept off 25 lbs for 2 years. Habits start early and lead either to obesity or relatively healthy or fitness nut. I'm thinking those Mommas who drive thru for dinner 3x a week are paving a path for their kids to obesity and overweight. School PE is no replacement for thoughtful parenting.
