Good point, Ozarkrazo. I really believe that once upon a time, the U of A aspired to be a true "university," more than just a reason for having a football team, and more than just a repository for Walton money. No longer. When you name a PR man for your chancellor, where does that leave education? How long has it been since we had a real academic person at the helm in Fayetteville? (Don't dare call John White, an engineer, an academic person. He did away with the museum.) As eLwood is fond of saying, it's all about mo money, and education gets lost in the shuffle, along with integrity and honesty.

UA-Fayetteville, UCA, UAMS, ATU. How many more institutions of higher corruption will we tolerate, before we enact measures to force them to comply with open records laws that all cover all other public entities?

Yes, politically powerful people are on their boards, but that does not excuse the universities from being honest. It does not give them license to give golden parachutes to dishonest administrators forced out. It does not matter if the universities' hush money is from public funds or raised from private donors, it's money the schools can never use for education.

We like to believe that education will help people to live better lives. These colleges have proven that "better" is not necessarily "more moral."

The University of Arkansas has a record of stalling and stonewalling public information requests it doesn't like. The hostile attitude toward openness and transparency is both legally dubious and reckless. It causes untold damage by undermining the public's trust and fostering cynicism toward the public service. That the current University leadership doesn't seem to understand this is perhaps the most worrying of all. If they are not motivated by ethics, at least they should be motivated by political realism. How are they gonna argue for increased public support for higher education if they won't be accountable to the public?

Scandals like this are easy prey for right-wing ideologues (such as those sitting on the ADG editorial board, see my letter at http://tinyurl.com/abhppe5) eager to undermine public institutions. The best strategy for the University is transparency and uncompromising ethics. What is good for the University as a public institution needs to be kept distinct from what top administrators think is good for them.

Incidentally, the public might be thrilled to know that the University has a whole web site dedicated to ethics - ethics.uark.edu. They might be surprised to find that the standard of "ethics" it expresses is "students shouldn't copy homework". Really, that's all there is to say about ethics at a public University???

There is a disturbing issue that hasn't been addressed in any reporting I have seen: why was the pay of the lower-ranked female employee reduced (from $91k to $68k) while Choate kept his $350k outsize paycheck? If Choate was ultimately responsible (as the UA has said), why was only the underling (female!) punished? Questions like that need answers.

You are right, Max, about the Democrat-Gazette this morning. It probably has some of the best reporting on important issues as any single edition in years. We all have admired Debra Hale-Shelton for a long time. Let's add Evie Blad to our admiration list now, too. I have appreciated her work for some time also, ever since she worked in Northwest Arkansas. And don't forget Charlie Frago. He's turned in some great articles recently, too. It's not too often I brag on the DOG, but give credit when credit is due, and it sure deserves it today.

A culture of integrity is needed, along with spreadsheets. Deans and Chancellors are isolated from the hands-on classroom teachers and, at UAMS, clinicians, too busy perusing spreadsheets to know their people. Building the brick/mortar trumps knowing what goes on in that building.

"The state SHOULD fund magnet schools in perpetuity. (Though they are destined to be destroyed in time by creation of more charter schools.)"

On that score, Max and others concerned about Arkansas education might be interested in NYT editorial today, with these lead papragraphs:

"The charter school movement gained a foothold in American education two decades ago partly by asserting that independently run, publicly financed schools would outperform traditional public schools if they were exempted from onerous regulations. The charter advocates also promised that unlike traditional schools, which were allowed to fail without consequence, charter schools would be rigorously reviewed and shut down when they failed to perform.

"With thousands of charter schools now operating in 40 states, and more coming online every day, neither of these promises has been kept. Despite a growing number of studies showing that charter schools are generally no better — and often are worse — than their traditional counterparts, the state and local agencies and organizations that grant the charters have been increasingly hesitant to shut down schools, even those that continue to perform abysmally for years on end."
Chancellor Gearhart, why not make 'The University' a shining example of openness?

I remember when one of my agencies was taking a failed youth home into receivership. It was called Sanctuary. I googled the word to learn more about the entity that we were going to have to eventually sell to somebody. Unfortunately, the word "sanctuary" has a special meaning in the S & M community. So I had to report myself to the administrative officer before the big net in the sky fell down on me. That is one thing. Actively looking at porn on a government computer is another.
