Price gouging: It costs more to send a text message on Earth than from Mars

, Verizon Wireless and AT&T will both charge $0.20 per text message if you don’t buy a texting plan from them. Even at a more conservative pricing of five cents per message, that means the carriers are charging around $383,000 per gigabyte.

By comparison, the total cost for the Mars Global Surveyor to send a gigabyte back to Earth, is only $284,000. This includes the $200 million cost of launching the satellite, and nine years of operational costs incurred by its NASA crew. That’s right — it costs US tax payers $99,000 less to send a gigabyte of data from Mars than it does for cellphone users to send a gigabyte worth of 160 character text messages.

Although, believing that population density is irrelevant to cost to the subscriber is simply ignorant. Installation costs are nearly the same to run a fiber optic cable to a single family home as to an apartment building.

Politically neutral has become their definition of "liberal" nowadays. The result has been that, to fill the backlog as quickly as possible, the administration has caved in to the hostage takers and is now appointing judicial eunuchs, even though they too face Repug withering fire.

Medicare costing more because medical costs are spiraling out of control. So what does the staunchest austerity Senator propose to do about it? Keep handing over an extra $500,000,000 per year for price maintanence of dialysis medicine. It only took about $60K to buy him off:

"WASHINGTON -- Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch angrily defended the inclusion of a controversial provision in the fiscal cliff deal that will pay major dividends to a single biopharmaceutical company, Amgen. The top Republican on the Senate Finance Committee, Hatch teamed with panel chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.) to include a host of tax extenders, credits and other provisions that added billions to the price tag of the bipartisan bargain.

The Amgen provision first surfaced in The New York Times, which noted that the bill blocks Medicare from regulating the price of Amgen's dialysis drug for two more years at a cost to the program of roughly $500 million. Democrats in the House have pledged to repeal it and former Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wisc.) launched a petition to have it stripped. Hatch, however, said he resents the response.

WTF!

A comunication that consumes comparitvely no time nor band width COSTS EXTRA! (a point of clarification, costs extra in the US)

The wireless companies had had to get competitive amongst themselves but then in a obvious illegal colusion all decided to hook kids on the no frills text option and then charge a giant premium on a 144 character max text (nanosecond blip) over minutes long open line voice transmission.

Was at a meeting earlier today and learned that China is now number one nation in use of alternative energy, solar, wind and other renewables. China is installing solar panels at 3x the rate of U.S. Germany is the solar leader.

Instead of subsidizing mega banks, who do little for this nation, it's about time millions of homeowers get some low interest money to install solar panels.

Not only are we being wholesale RIPPED off on internet/tv services cellular phones are biggest overpriced thing in American's budgets. For $15 mo a Mexican gets good cellular service. About the same in Europe and even less in India.

I know DBI agrees, and perhaps Jim, that Cox Communications is the biggest racket ever perpetuated on people.

Google Fiber came to KC and started in a section of KCK (Wyandotte County) and on the corner of a Westport parcel on the KS side where they are headquartered. Young entrepreneurs are actually moving to Kansas City to start businesses here so they can be on the fastest network in the land. Speed to market means money for these young Bill Gates types.

I think Time Warner is probably dropping their rates so people will stay with them vs. jump ship to Google Fiber once it becomes available in their neighborhood. I see signs in neighborhoods like Brookside saying bring Google Fiber here next.

I'm using CLEAR service for my wireless internet connection and I was paying $60 a month and complained so they dropped it to $45 a month, but I'm thinking about going down to NKC office called Link City and switching to them for $25 for NKC residents. Internet service in KC is competitive. So seems to be a price war like the granite companies had when building was hot.”
