Citizen1, "716,000 citizens per rep in Arkansas", but not everywhere. Seven states have only 1 U.S. Representative with populations as follows (estimated as of 7/1/12, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._…

Montana- 1,005,141
Delaware- 917,092
South Dakota- 833,354
Alaska- 731,449
North Dakota- 699,628
Vermont- 626,011
Wyoming- 576,412

And 5 other states have 2 U.S. Reps:

Idaho- 1,595,728 (797,864/Rep.)
Hawaii- 1,392,313 (696,156/Rep.)
Maine- 1,329,192 (664,596/Rep.)
New Hampshire- 1,320,718 (660,359/Rep.)
Rhode Island- 1,050,292 (525,146/Rep.)

Among those 12 states Montana is the big loser with 1 U.S. Representative for its 1,005,141 citizens while Rhode Island is the big winner with 1 per 525,146 of its citizens. That's an almost 2-1 difference.

And the Electoral College? Vibrant and forever Red Wyoming gets to cast 3 ReTHUGlicon votes for president every four years, 1 vote for every 192,137 Wyoming residents. Here in Arkansas with 2,949,131 residents we only get to cast 1 electoral vote (6 EVs statewide) for each 491,521 Arkansas citizens.

      >> moving presidential elections to a system decided by the national vote, previously a one-man, one-vote idea favored primarily by more liberal types. How about that? Representative democracy.

Think of how much better off our nation would be today had Clinton accomplished that. The U.S. governed by a majority vote. No overburdened Medicare (Advantage and Part D) no war in the M.East to drain blood and treasure, no huge deficits. John Roberts missing from the Supremes. Gore may have bored us to death but it would have been preferable to 8 years of disaster that hit the U.S.

      Torn on electoral college idea.

On one side the spectical of Hanging Florida Chads or Ohio HyJinks being a moot point has appeal, on the other hand most of the country would be ignored if politicians just went for population centers.

On the other other hand, the President would then only need to appeal to voters instead of Senators and Congressmen to bring the vote in their district or state. (less able to now than in the past but still a factor)

Now on other 1man-1vote issue.

If electoral college divorced from the state as a block then why should Representatives be tied to a state?

Currently 716,000 citizens per rep.

Let Rep Districts just follow the population instead of being hemmed in by state boundaries. East Colorado High Plains is more similar to Kansas in needs and culture than Rocky Mountain West Colorado which shares more with Rocky Mountain Wyoming.

Then House of Reps follows population and Senate represents states, and POTUS represents USA.

The author seems to be promoting ALE schools, "serving [problem] students at a school just for them." Don't we have these in Little Rock? Should we have more of them? Could that end up causing the type of racial and economic segregation that some claim are being promoted by charter schools?
