I had an uncle/aunt in Salinas who owned a chain of gas-service stations. They referred to the Salinas agri area 'the valley,' which was/is the salad bowl of the West.

      "Liberals have zero desire to cut spending."

Actually, if you'll just check the spending records of the last few administrations you'll find that so-called conservatives have created greater deficits than liberals. Conservatives must have a "below zero" desire to cut spending. Two wrongs don't make a right but either side can point fingers. Just don't point first.

I just noticed that, as usual, CBB has already made my point and in better detail. I'm posting this anyway cuz I've gone to the trouble of typin'.

      The Republicans created a situation where deficits will occur until we decide that we aren't the world's poiceman and bring revenue back to a level to support a "worls power". The military budget is 40% higher than 2001 and we certainly aren't 40% safer. We continue to create enemies faster than we can build those drones or buy missles. And Rocks, Clinton had a budget that had expenses less than revenue and Bush just gave the money to his rich friends and put us back in the deficit column BEFORE he became General Bush with his flight suit.

Republicans want more spent on the military since those are their Republican contributors but if they want more military, pay for it with increased taxes. We would never have been in Iraq if Cheney had to pay a graduated income tax surcharge to pay for the Afganinstan war. The American people would have bought into it but by making it invisible by having the wars off-budget, the Republican wars created massive debt and resulted in more American killed overseas than we lost in NYC and the Pentagon.

In reality, 2/3 of the national debt is still a Republican debt, regardless of how often TP FAUX heads try to maked it look like it is all due to Democratic admninistrations.

      ES's rants gained a bit of credibility when a memo about killing Americans was leaked recently.
====
"The paper's basic contention is that the government has the authority to carry out the extrajudicial killing of an American citizen if "an informed, high-level official" deems him to present a "continuing" threat to the country. This sweeping authority is said to exist even if the threat presented isn't imminent in any ordinary sense of that word, even if the target has never been charged with a crime or informed of the allegations against him, and even if the target is not located anywhere near an actual battlefield."
"Even more problematic, the paper contends that the limits on the government's claimed authority are not enforceable in any court."
http://www.aclu.org/blog/national-security…
====
"If a high-ranking administration official does it, it's not illegal. At least not when we're talking about ordering the death of an American citizen the administration believes to be associated with Al Qaeda."
"Since the administration's "kill list" is secret, those targeted have no opportunity to challenge their designation as terrorists who may be deprived of life by a "high level national security official." Nevertheless, the paper concludes, the Due Process Clause—the part of the Fifth Amendment to the Constitution that protects Americans from being deprived of "life, liberty, or property, without due process of law"—"would not prohibit a lethal operation of the sort contemplated here."
====
Another problem with the memo is its redefining of words, like "continuing threat,""imminent," and "due process." The redefinition of Due Process began last March when AG Holder stated: "The Constitution guarantees due process, not judicial process."
http://www.motherjones.com/mojo/2012/03/er…
They say it’s not because they’re now widely seen as a clearing house for discredited ideas. They say it’s mostly because of old people misplacing the clicker.” –Bill Maher

      Eric Cantor, 1st assistant whatever in the US House and Tea Party hero spoke to AEI today about the new Reopublican platform with all sorts of glowing pro-business and pro-immigration words. However, what is changing is the marketing plan to create the new words to describe the same old hateful message that Cantor and his ilk have been throwing out for years. He isn't changing nor are the small minds in the Tea Pot (see Jason RAPErt as an example). They just know that some major GOP backers with a bundle of cash need new words to describe their hateful platform or next time Cantor may well be minority whip of the US House under former speaker Orangeman.

      You who use and enjoy local, public television please take note: Sen Jake Files of Ft Smith is not your friend:

"Fayetteville has more access channels than any other city in Arkansas -- Government Channel, Public Access, UATV, and Fayar TV. Senate Bill 101, being pushed by Cox Communications, would undermine availability of public, education, and government access channels, exempt itself from city franchise and right-of-way agreements, and make their operations more profitable at the expense of the public. It is what is known in the vernacular as a Bad Bill.

The fact that it was assigned to the Insurance and Commerce Committee -- instead of the City,County,Local Committee, or the Advanced Communications and Information Technology Committee -- is a clear indication of its true purpose.

If you appreciate public, non-commercial local cable channels, please contact your senator and representatives. If you gave more in contributions than Cox, they might listen to your views."

LONDON — British lawmakers on Tuesday voted overwhelmingly in favor of a bill to legalize same-sex marriage championed by Prime Minister David Cameron, despite strong opposition from within his Conservative Party.

In a first House of Commons vote, lawmakers voted 400 to 175 in support of the legislation. There was majority support from the left-leaning Labour Party and Liberal Democrats party, but around half of the Conservative lawmakers rejected the proposals or abstained.

The bill will have to go through more detailed parliamentary debates and a vote in the House of Lords, where a vote in favor is likely given the strong support Tuesday. If it becomes law, the proposed bill would enable same-sex couples to get married in both civil and religious ceremonies, provided that the religious institution consents.
