I currently work for Springfield Public Schools & believe that Dr. Milton's positive impact within our schools is definitely not being addressed. Too often media focuses on the negative and completely disregards the positive. Dr. Milton has brought many great ideas to our schools. I know personally (as I work in the Administration Building here in Springfield) that Dr. Milton spends many of his weekends in meetings and is an extremely hard-working superintendent. He is a caring as well as compassionate superintendent and I think he will be an asset to any school district.

It truly saddens me to read all of the negative comments regarding Dr. Milton. It is truly, in my opinion, a smear campaign that is motivated by a small group of people with ill intent. Looking beyond that, as a parent in the school district, it is obvious to see the growth that has occurred during Dr. Milton's tenure as superintendent. So, let's talk about a few of those things. Perhaps we should highlight the awesome Saturday academies (leadership, nursing, communications, etc.) that he started. Or, maybe we should talk about the phenomenal P4 (Physician's Pipeline Preparatory Program) program that was launched in partnership with SIU School of Medicine. Maybe we should think about the Capital College Preparatory Academy that he started and in its second year of existence, 92.5 percent of the scholars met or exceeded standards in reading and math. The significance is that this school has a very high % of students living at or below poverty level!!! Another awesome thing instituted by Dr. Milton is Superintendent's Roundtable--where a group of students serves as a cabinet body to Dr. Milton. He also added the addition of a student representative to the School Board. The high schools are also starting speech teams as well. Or perhaps we should highlight the progress schools are making in seeing test scores rise. We may not be where we need to be, but we are making progress. I can name many more examples, but time and space elude me. We need to talk FACTS people...let's look at the positives and stop wasting so much time spewing hate (and RACISM)!!!! Dr. Milton cares, has the skill and experience, and can get the job done. While I hate to see him leave Springfield, I despise the way that he is treated here. He doesn't deserve it. His skill needs to be utilized in a district that is ready, open, and willing to take their students to another level. Springfield...we just are not there. The politics get in the way of people making decisions that are best for our KIDS!!!

I have lived in Springfield, IL the past 7 years after retiring from a 35 year career as a Newspapers executive. I have lived in major Metro cities and frankly, I am embarrassed by our communities media coverage of Dr. Walter Milton. I do not feel their coverage of the school board or Dr. Milton personally, has been fair. My personal feeling is they are trying to evoke emotion to sell more newspapers and gain more audience.

My husband and I lived next door to Dr. and Mrs. Milton until recently. They were wonderful neighbors and great parents (their children are the most polite and respectful youngsters, I have seen).

Our children are grown, but two of them have chosen the teaching/coaching profession. Our daughter-in-law teaches in District 186 (at one of the smallest elementary schools). She would often tell me how Dr. Milton would tour the school and take time to talk with teachers and students, at length, to learn how to improve the educational experience.

Dr. Milton has done many great things for the educational system and our community. It's a shame the superintendent's job is so thankless, especially in these difficult economic times.

I am from Springfield, Illinois. I know Dr.Milton both personally and professionally. I have the opportunity to see him in his roles as parent, husband, friend, neighbor, as well as a professional.
I can honestly say, this man is does a balancing act, worthy or honorable mention.
I have seen him come home on a Friday nite, and call people to go to a District 186 Football, or Basketball Game with him, just because he felt it was his duty to just "be there" to support the teams.

He has been instrumental in helping recruit folks from the medical community to come to Springfield. AND, they were impressed with not only Dr. Milton, but with the schools they visited and principals they interviewed. Due to his efforts, this community now has a Pediatric Neuro Surgeon. (who by the way, is married to a TEACHER, yes she is the one who visited schools and interviewed school principals, she was impressed)

What was in this for Dr. Milton? He was not paid to do this, but pride for his job, his teachers, and his District was his motivation.
We were successful in the above recruitment, there was a dinner to welcome the physician and his wife. Dr. Milton was gracious enough to attend this dinner, on the night of Dr. Milton's Wedding Anniversary! ( yes, his lovely wife Lisa was also there)
This is JUST ONEof many examples of the way I have seen Dr. Milton conduct himself.
In my opinion, he is a Superstar, and any community who has him is blessed.
It's amazing how we can take a few negative things about a person and then make a complete judgemen. What good has Mr. Milton done? How did he get the job in this first place, if background searchs can reveal all? To my understanding Mr. Milton is a stand up person that puts the children of his district first, puts forth good judgement in relation to budgets, schools and teachers (check out the positive info it definitely outweights the bad press). In closing a superintendent's job is just as political as running for mayor, so you will have critics, supporters and radicals looking to stir the pot. Don't let a good person with excellent credentials get thrown under the bus without doing your own real due diligence.

Why not offer the job to someone who cares about Little Rock schools, like Jim Argue? I realize there are educational requirements which I'm not familiar with, but none of the candidates listed in this morning's D-G seems to have the feel for Little Rock that Argue has shown over the years.
