I work with a 4H group 1(one) hour a week and I had to have a background check. If there is ever a problem involving these "pastors", the school district and the School Board better check their liability insurance because they will lose, especially since it has been pointed out to them. And don't expect that group in Texas to come running with the millions because they maybe party to the suit also (and should be for misleading advice).

In the interim, every church, every faith in Conway should descend on the school at lunch from the liturgical churches to the one that meets in the Sale Barn. New Life isn't the only church in town, hell, there is either a bank or a church on every corner in the whole town! Since 2/3rd are SBC (although not so-labelled), it is obviously they can't even agree on what they do believe. And you want them talking to kids? Don't be surprised at what the kids "learn" about religion.

Why not use the whole day on Sunday and Wednesday and your "family life centers" and do you "counseling" there and not in a PUBLIC school where everyone is not of your faith and may not agree with your interpretion of any part of your faith.

Insult the people you need to persuade, however, and most of them will suddenly care quite a lot. Get ready for a legal fight to the death.

When my son was in jr high in Springdale, Armani Ronnie had youth pastors wandering the halls and proselytizing kids at lunch. I called the principal who said they allowed religious groups to do that - but he couldn't name a single other church that had. He thought that made it all right. I enlisted the help for Americans United, who told me that only a formal written policy outlining equal access would make it constitutional. They also offered to fund a lawsuit if I wanted to act as plaintiff. As tempting as that was, I didn't want my son to be known as the kids whose dad kicked jebus out of schools in Springdale. BTW, Murry was a principal at a middle school in Springdale at the time. Had Promise Keeper swag all over his office.

I would hope that since these "christers" seem to have access through out the school that they all have had to have the same FBI background checks that every teacher and staff member has to have. Remember that the last two widely reported perverts in the central Arkansas area were involved in church programs. I think one was a Youth Minister and the other a Choir Director.

I know what you mean by that but, really, they seem to be pretty much the same color.
Also, I've started to memorize your chant: STOP YOU IGNORANT EXTREMEST CHRISTERS STOP! Normally, I'd say it wouldn't do the trick but you never know. Remember, how those Red, Commie Ruskies just threw in the towel when Reagan called them "the evil empire"? That's all it took. Wish we'd known that back in '47.

We must get off our sofas and save Arkansas by traveling where the extremest Christers are and scream STOP YOU IGNORANT EXTREMEST CHRISTERS STOP!

Being polite to pushy crazy people will never work. People indoctrinating children into STUPID is a sin if there is such a thing. People FK'ing with our school systems should be accorded the same treatment we'd give to a naked pedophile in the lunch room.

These extremest Christers in Conway are merely Phelps of a different color and good Arkansans should form a human barricade to prevent the Christ-Talkers from getting within 3 blocks of an Arkansas public school. We've been nice and it hasn't worked. Smite some preacher balls and they might just back off and find a new hobby. (chapter 2, verse 11-13, book of DBI)

I've lived in Arkansas all of my life. Most of the time I've been dumb but happy. Anyway, I could always say "Thank God for Mississippi!" But then I quit believin' in God, so I couldn't thank God any more but I still knew that Mississippi was still there and, on average, they were dumber than us. Then our state government went republican...

I moved to Conway about 10 years ago for no other reason than a good friend lived here and I had nothin' better to do that weekend. Then my good friend got a better job somewhere else and moved away. Well, OK, but thank God for Cabot I thought but forgettin' that I didn't believe in God anymore, but BY GOD, Cabot was still there with it's average IQ in the low 60's. But then Rapert got elected and then the churches merged with the school district...

So here I am a stranger in a strange land. If things get tough, I'll run down to one of our Wal-Mart Super Centers which are legion and buy me a couple of Glocks and a few AK-47's. Bubba, down the street will teach me how to shoot. He knows I'm agnostic but he says it's ok because his great grandpappy came from across the water himself. In short, I'll be all right 'cause I ain't completely gotten over the dumb part.

I got all on the defensive because of Norma's post:
"Why else would anybody live in Conway?"

Norma, just in the off chance you get stuck here for another 15 minutes, you might gravitate over towards Hendrix. I know they're Methodist, but believe me, they don't mean nothin' by it.

I'm glad you pulled out, Norma, and you are probably right about many parents, however, I hesitate to say most, and I will tell you why. Most parents nowadays do not know what is happening to their children once they put them on the school bus. Most don't go to their PTA conferences; most don't attend school programs; most do not help their children with homework; most are so exhausted when they get home after working for hours at substandard wages that they can't think about anything else but getting ready for the next day's toil.

This is the 47 per cent that Romney was talking about. This is the working poor. Just getting by is all they can manage. They don't have time to check into what their children are doing at school. If they did, they would lose hours, and thus income. They have entrusted their children to the schools, and it looks like in Conway the schools might have violated that trust. Do the parents know that their children are going to be subjected to religious indoctrination?
Do they know that they have the right to object?

I doubt if they do know, because most of the parents don't follow the news media to learn what is going on with their school. They have turned their children over to the schools, and the schools have turned them over to religious, rightwing fundamentalists. That is why we need organizations to protect those children, even if their parents won't.

And I, Norma Bates, would think that most parents who live in Conway think this is all just fine.

Why else would anybody live in Conway?

I was there once.

For fifteen minutes.

By invitation.

A mistake.

They had a plastic floral wreath on the door (this was June) with glitter on the lilies, a collection of Countess Something-or-Other dolls from QVC displayed on pedestals around the living room, and a large framed Thomas "Painter of Light" Kinkade print over the gas fireplace. Which was blazing. In June.

They were serving non-alcoholic punch and Oreos.

I half expected the host and hostess to break into an Amway presentation any moment.

I just couldn't, you understand.

I suddenly came down with sharp stomach pains that vanished miraculously the moment I hit the freeway back to The Rock.

I am far removed from those days, Yoss, but I do remember the social pressures an adolescent faces. However, that said, I wonder how many of the childrens' parents have told their kids not to talk with them. I would guess that most of the parents don't even know this is going on, and that is the sadness in all of this.

plain, "The school couldn't make them, could it?"
Maybe you are too far removed from those adolescent years to remember the social pressures in the schools. Cliques in the Conway schools center around church affiliation. The school administration and the ministers don't have to lift a finger to "make them" attend, fear of being ostracized by other students is quite powerful.
