Yeah, Dott, I think the whole Republican philosophy has changed to controlling the state houses, and they have been very successful at that. The Democratic Party in the South has been handicapped by the fact that the national Democratic policy makers have realized that they can win presidential elections without the South, and thus have written it off. The national Party simply has not supported congressional candidates in Arkansas as they should have. With more money, the national Party probably could have saved the First District and the Second District. I guess they did not think the candidates were strong enough. Maybe they were right. Herb Rule, while and admirable person, was not a strong candidate against Tim Griffin. Neither was Joyce Elliott. With more support for Congressional candidates, the Democratic candidates for local races on the ballot would have done better also. I think it is also true that support for Republican candidates in local races on the ballot helped the Republican candidates for the United States House.

Before everyone goes overboard in declaring the death of the GOP as we have known it. The Koch Bros. and others' tactics of pouring money into state legislature races and thus controlling the reapportionment of electoral districts has been a success (http://tinyurl.com/unpopularwin and http://tinyurl.com/gophouse). Democrats got 54,301,095 votes while Republicans got 53,822,442. That’s a close election — 48.8%-48.5% –but it’s still a popular vote win for the Democrats.

Rove, the Koch Bros, and many others noticed and will continue to use the tactic to hold the red states, the house and continue to try to control the senate, They might succeed. Certainly it has worked in Arkansas.

2012 House Races in Arkansas (for today's demozette)

Candidate Money Raised Percent of Total Out Spent by
Campaign Spending
Tom Cotton (R) $2,213,218	32.41%
Tim Griffin (R) $1,619,346	23.71%
Rick Crawford (R)	$1,340,000	19.62%
Steve Womack (R)	$932,788 13.66%
Herb Rule (D) $251,060 3.68% $1,368,286
Scott Ellington (D) $372,375 5.45% $967,625
Gene Jefferies (D)	$100,330 1.47% $2,112,888

The DNC, DCCC and DSCC will not be of help since they have written off Arkansas as a lost cause and inconsequential state in national politics. So what will we reap from this?
More of the same wonderful legislation that we have all been conversing about since the session started.

So if you don't want more Rapert's, I suggest we stop sounding the death knell for national GOP aspirations and realize the the danger we haven't noticed slithering through the Arkansas and other state grassroots with a big bag of money.

Rove is right, but Davy Carter will be he one to watch if his cooperation with AR's conservative Democratic faction holds true; if Carter models a Republican-of-yore model, he is the Republican of the future. Possessing the same old - but perhaps more modestly incremental - ineffective policies with less absolutist demagoguery, Carter's the one I'm worried about. All other Rs? Please listen to Huckabuck.

eLwood, Rove wants GOP candidates who sound kinder and gentler, but who subscribe to the same anti-women beliefs, ala George Bush. With Karl Rove, there are no abiding truths; there are no first principles; there is only the political expedient. Success in winning office is the end-all; and he has proven that you can fool enough of the people enough of the time to get his candidate elected. We talked about the reprehensible Lee Atwater here on the blog the other night. Rove makes him a rank amateur by comparison.

      >>Rove is right in this instance. And if the GOP wants to be competitive in national elections....

Let's get one thing understood. Rove, having his ass dusted in 2012, still has his sights on U.S. Senate control. That was and remains his target because that's where any balance of power resides within his influence. Huck and his showbiz politics can't grasp that.

It was in the U.S. Senate where single payer health care was killed and the Republican plan substituted. It's in the Senate where Supremes are made or destroyed. The Senate is now the nest of power for POTUS candidates. McCain, Obama, Kerry, Hillary and notRomney. The great white hope, Rubico, hails from the Senate.

Rove wants kinder and gentler Senatorial candidates who don't lose the womenfolk every time they open their mouths. They can wreak havoc once they're seated.

It is my sincerest wish that the Stupid Party continues their Schlitz Brewing Company program so the world can be rid of them by 2016. Nothing works so well as doubling down on really bad ideas that the public rejects in droves until you're extinct like the dodo bird. We're in the process of watching the GOP die the death it so richly deserves. Yes, Arkansas will be the last of the Red states because we're always behind the national curve. Just hold your breath and be patient, Arkansas will be GOP-less in the not too distant future.

Karl Rove is leading an effort to disguise Republicans for future political races, not change them, not improve their ideas....just disguise them. In the near future we're going to see GOP candidates who pretend to love black people, women, Mexicans, gays and so on. They won't really feel that way in the core of their soul, they'll just pretend to be compassionate and reasonable and fair. PRETEND!

This will fail because no matter what they do, they can't change their bad brain wiring. The half of our population wired up like coolbreeze & Saline will never quit loving authoritarianism, will never be comfortable near non-white skin, will never truly accept women as their equals and must always feed on fear of anyone who isn't just like them.....white, uptight, greedy, selfish, mean, goose-stepping Bible thumpers of the first degree.

They can't change. If Huckabee becomes the undead like old Dick Cheney, 400 years from now he'll still be slinging the same ole shit. So beware of the pretend Republican makeover as phony as film clips of Hitler hugging a Jew....it will never ever be the real them. They're stuck with their bad brain wiring, but we don't have to be stuck with them.

Let them be LA cops, repo men, hall monitors, bill collectors, dog catchers, Army snipers, Baptist preachers, movie censors, Tour de France winners, telemarketers, utility executives, Yard Nazis, the people who exterminate unwanted animals at the Dog Pound....but never ever ever elect any of them to public office if you ever want life to be good for anyone living south of Walton money.

Karl Rove and Mike Huckabee are equal abominations walking the earth. Trust none of them, teach your children to run like hell from them. Again to paraphrase a liberal line....if you don't like misery, don't elect a Republican to anything.

Nicolle Wallace, who used to have some sort of communications gig in the Bush II White House, said that Marco Rubio knows who Tupac is and other stuff, plus he twitters and uses social media. That is supposed to burnish his hipster cred, I guess. Atrios says that his knowing who Tupac was is like Reagan knowing who Patsy Cline was. Repubs just don't get it. One is either hip or one is not. If you are trying to be, you probably aren't.
I'd be mighty impressed if Rubio knew about the original Tupac and not just his namesake.

Oh goodness, has losing another election brought forth dissent? Dare I say consternation and frustration have built to such a heightened intensity level that members of the party are going to publicly begin a blame campaign in order to flush out all impurities hindering the party in it's mission of pure ideology in order to bring the purity and sanctity of their beliefs to all americans, thereby capturing all hearts and minds for the next raising up of the true disciple to ease us into the apocalyptic never land that will evolve into a proud nation of serfs and have mores. The spiritual and religious trappings are being developed using Dick Armey's tea party endeavor as a model. Stay tuned to the primitive network while a new hair weaving class is being formed to utilize all the excess hair pulled from heads of those who can't believe the backward progress into a time where fire can be reinvented.

Seems just yesterday that mainstream Repubs were hailing the Tea Party as their salvation. TP jump-started the Grand Old Pervs. Sarah as the maidenhead, Beck stoking the fires of hate and discontent, how could they lose! It was Roger Ailes' dream party where facts had zero value. Two-ton Christy said 'hey, our tent is big now' and "taking our country back" replaced the Pledge of Allegiance.

How quickly they forget and for the elephant party that's a big lot of forgetting. They did take the South with all it's ignorance, poverty and giant welfare handouts. So, one could say they did take "their" country back.

Interesting that Bro-Huck chose the term, "fratricide", which in its original meaning, is a guy thing. In the next election cycle, even Arkansas Republicans are likely to see that their Man's World don't mean nothin' without a woman, or a girl.

"If the Republican Party wants to render itself utterly, utterly irrelevant, the best way to do it is . . . "

One thing Mike Huckabee understands is irrelevance. He's staring it in the face.

"When you marginalize the Tea Party, marginalize the pro-life and pro-family part of the party, you lose every election coming up in the future. You lose every election."

Of course, in Huckabee's stupefying ignorance and religious fanaticism, he gets those facts as backwards as he gets David Barton being an "historian."

It's EXACTLY the GOP's rabid religious right bullies ("legitimate rape") and their witch-burning anti-women anti-gay stance (what Huckabee euphemistically calls "pro-life and pro-family") that have already doomed the party in elections going forward.

They know it too. Thus their ever-more-desperate machinations to rig elections they can no longer win legitimately, through fear-mongering, lying, gerrymandering and voter repression.

Karl Rove knows it too. But his magical-thinking tactic of changing the "message" without changing the agenda of the GOP (MORE lying, in other words) won't work either.

America continues to grow bigger (and better informed) than the GOP's cornered base of rich old white men and their dependents, hiding behind fundamentalist Christianity. America is women, gays, blacks, Latinos, immigrants, atheists, agnostics, poor, middle-class and all the rest. NONE of the "rest" of America are included by the GOP any longer.

Fewer still will fit in two years from now. Or twenty.

But long before then, for better or worse and health permitting, Huckabee will be Left Behind as a sad relic of the Good Ol' Boys in the Good Ol' Days.

TX, in my experience (including some roommates I've had) 'thinking Republicans' is an oxymoron. They can be swayed by the dumbest arguments I've ever heard just because they're plausible on the surface to someone who is easily swayed that's convinced someone, somewhere is getting away with something and they can't get a piece of the action.

Hey hucklebee, the tea party guys do not fit in the club or the republican party. They are the problem for your party and your support for them clearly outlines where you stand, something that Arkies have known ever since you sleezed your way onto the scene. The my way or the highway stance of the far right is not good for the republican party and certainly is not good for the country. Something that most thinking Republicans understand and obviously you do not.

Rove is right in this instance. And if the GOP wants to be competitive in national elections, they must act like a big-tent coalition party like the Democrats, and nominate better-quality candidates with broad demographic appeal - and quit making stupid comments at private fundraisers that get caught on tape, pandering to the base instincts of some GOP donors.
