I think we ought to recomment RAPErt for pope. The person doesn't need to be a cardinal (most have been for past centuries) or even a priest (goes back a lot further). RAPErt seems to fit the need-arrogant, self-assured even when totally in error, semi-religious in his own mind. Problem area would be his youth but in that case, he would only be around until he mysterously disappears in a major who-done-it. They also have ways of doing that.

If the position is as important as they seem to believe, why let a guy hang on for many months or even years in a diminished state?

Sure some old codgers stay sharp until the end in their 80's or 90's but the reason it is so remarkable and remarked on is that it is so rare.

So let's do a little statistical analysis.

This Pope is the 16th that took the name Benedict. How many of the previous Benedicts (I through XVII) were sharp till the end.

Odds are that at least half were bonkers. Go to any retirement villiage and see how many residents can differentiate a family member from a staff member.

Now figure there were 23 Johns, 12 Piuss, 16 Gregories. How many were coherant till the end?

Hmm. Wonder if the continuing revelations of the pedophile protection racket that Pope Rat led the last 15 years had anything to do with his sudden retirement?

I would applaud his leaving, but the same bunch of angry old men will be selecting his successor. There aren't many more former Hitler Youth to choose from. Unfortunately, there are still many potential popes among the cardinals who learned their iron fist tactics under dictators like Franco (who ruled into the early 1970's). Expect to see someone like a Tomás de Torquemada to be appointed.

Cardinal Peter Turkson of Ghana is the Guardian's favorite to be next to wear the "shoes of the fisherman". I found this interesting bit about homosexuality on his web page.

"Despite having flirted with it in his youth, he now calls it "horrendous...I am jealous of their fashion sense."

"...Catholicism is “true” and other religions are “deficient;” that the modern, secular world, especially in Europe, is spiritually weak; and that Catholicism is in competition with Islam. He had also strongly opposed homosexuality, the ordination of women priests and stem cell research."
Substitute any number of churches and denominations here in Arkansas (and elsewhere) and you have their beliefs in a nutshell.
