Happening now. Congressional approval of Federal Disaster Aid for Churches.
Since churches already receive fire and police protection dispite paying no taxes, this goes too far. Let them at least carry their own insurance.

I was at last night's meeting and was surprised how few community members actually attended. Sure, in modern society folks have become complacent about keeping an eye on elected officials, but two television channels thought it was important enough to send a camera crew. Channel 7 even lead with the story on the night of the state of the union address.

The folks I spoke with seemed to be the ones who were concerned about the pastors visiting the school. I expected to see a big posse of ministers sitting in the front row and monitoring the body language of the board members. But they must have been busy recruiting at a 5th grade sports event instead.

      DBI has it right again.

And Joe Quimby asked the question that I have. Why is ANYONE who isn't a parent, guardian or school official allowed on a public school campus during the school day?

Doesn't a parent have a reasonable assumption when they drop their child off at the school door that educated, highly trained and licensed school officials are the ONLY people who will have influence over their children until they are picked up in the afternoon?

If one of these "youth pastors" were to do something unacceptable to a child while on a public school campus, would the state ultimately be held responsible? Are these people licensed? Do they have education degrees? Have they passed extensive background checks? Do they have training in child psychology and education?

If the answer is no, then as DBI said, why not let anyone selling something come on campus to peddle their wares during the learning hours? Why not do this after school hours, off campus? Can't the message wait a few hours and take place on non-taxpayer funded property?

Conway's policy certainly constitutes "special access," unless any group or individual wishing to accost students at lunch is free to do so.

While the Constitution guarantees the right to "free exercise" of religion, it does not grant the right to impose one's religion on others. Approaching young students in their school lunchroom IS such an imposition. Middle graders are particularly vulnerable to social and situational pressure--they are unlikely to feel comfortable telling a "youth minister" to leave them alone.

I'm sure the Liberty Institute creators of this program know as much, just as the superintendent had to know that releasing this plan for public comment late on Thursday would prevent public comment.

Not as long as they are armed. Since the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun, the more good guys with guns on campus, the better.

And since good guys outnumber bad guys, statistics tell us that the more armed people on campus -- regardless of whether they belong there or not -- the safer our children are.

What is the purpose of these visits?

Given the increasing need for security at schools, there really ought to be a presumption that no one is allowed on campus unless it's an absolute necessity.

Granting unnecessary school access to anyone who isn't a student, faculty-member or parent, at this point, is an invitation to trouble and taxpayers shouldn't have to shoulder the expense of new software or security guards to protect that access.

Why not let in the NRA? Why not Amway? Why not the owner of the biggest tattoo parlor? It's all about brainwashing kids into giving their free labor and their money to one specific group. Too bad Rev. Moon died, he missed out on Conway teen money.

At least balance this brainwashing at school by inviting Buddhist monks, Mormon missionaries, Islamic recruiters, snake handling preachers from Kentucky, Scientology reps and swishy Catholic priests. Then there's that bunch in California who say Jesus wants us to smoke pot at every worship service.

Don't just keep pushing the General Motors of white people's religion on kids who should be learning their school lessons while on public school property. Too bad all those damn church buildings on every street corner in Conway and the entire South can't lure today's kids into their traps of lifelong ignorance & offering plate money for nothing no matter how big their Gym For Jesus may be. Invade the public schools!

Hell....why not haunt the maternity wards of every hospital and sprinkle or stamp em as they slide out of the womb? If the Christers could ever figure out how to invent Savior Subpoenas that made church attendance and offering giving mandatory they might lay off our kids....at least until they're old enough to earn their own offering money. Nukes are awful, AIDS is horrible, religion is worst of all.......Jesus!

I never made it as a student journalist at the Wampus Cat student newspaper at Conway High School. My big article about the draft revision of the district policy manual got censored by the journalism teacher and the principal and the School Board. But my censored article got the policy changed. The policy was that pregnant students were to be expelled from the school system, apparently a holdover policy from many years past.

In this controversy, I'll come down for the free association rights of the students. But the district must accommodate believers of all faiths.
