BS! Steven. US had 32,163 gun deaths the other countries (with roughly the same population) combined 3,721. You can try but you won't rationalize that away, no matter how blind you are, no matter how loudly you proclaim it, no matter how many times you repeat it. 32,163 vs 3,721.

As the U.S. does more research on more current statistics the gap will widen as the firearm proliferation you sponsor and embrace proceeds.

dott, these countries STILL have high crime rates that are not lessenes by the lack of guns. Rape, robbery, vioent crimes are STILL prevelent in places like Britain, France, Sweden and Canada, where their shooting deaths may be low, but their violent crimes are still high. Canada has a higher rape incidence than the U.S., so it is superfluous to state that gun control has much bearing in crime.

Another point of fact for you, dott, actually the study has been done, and re-done when it was challenged. Gary Kleck did the study years ago. He was trying to prove your point, and in the end found out that the opposite was true. The incidence of guns used for self defense where the gun was not fired was quite high. Kinda meshes nicely with my experience and the experiences of those during the L.A. riots.

If you combine the population of Japan, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark, Australia, Great Britain, Germany and France the total will roughly equal the population of the United States.

I was able to track down gun death statics for the US and these countries for 2008-10 (so can you). US had 32,163 gun deaths the other countries combined 3,721. However, by total number of gun deaths and gun death rate the United States, with roughly the same population, is ten to eight times worse. I don't think that U.S. citizens are more homicidal and/or suicidal than those other countries' citizens. They are just reaping the rewards of more guns in circulation and looser gun control laws.

P.S. To the best of my knowledge those countries have not suffered a coup or overthrow because of a lack of privately owned firearms in the last 100 or many more years.

P.P.S. ". . . show the number of times a gun was used to save someone, yet wasn't fired? . . ." Steven E. I can't, Steve and neither can you, but I would be willing to place a wager with you, that a higher number of people who showed a gun to an armed robber or assailant got shot or shot at than the ones who didn't.

It's got to be drummed
You've got to be taught to be afraid
Of people whose eyes are oddly made,
And people whose skin is a diff'rent shade,
You've got to be carefully taught.
You've got to be taught before it's too late,
Before you are six or seven or eight,
To hate all the people your relatives hate,
You've got to be carefully taught!

" While the show was on a tour of the Southern United States, lawmakers in Georgia introduced a bill outlawing entertainment containing "an underlying philosophy inspired by Moscow."[2] One legislator said that "a song justifying interracial marriage was implicitly a threat to the American way of life."[2] Rodgers and Hammerstein defended their work strongly. James Michener, upon whose stories South Pacific was based, recalled, "The authors replied stubbornly that this number represented why they had wanted to do this play, and that even if it meant the failure of the production, it was going to stay in."[2]"
And let's be clear about this, Tom Cotton: You ARE a neophyte politician. Not a neophyte soldier. Not a yokel. But you've got a lot to learn about politics.

Don't let your pushy advisors push you out front too soon. You're young, you've got plenty of time. And don't be afraid to change your mind about things as needed. As the poet said, a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.

Sound Policy - Yeah, a Harvard/Harvard Law yokel. He knows how to pahk the cah in Hahvahd Yahd.

That said, he is seriously risking national media over-exposure, apparently advised by overly-ambitious consultants whose primary interest is not necessarily the Fourth District. He's only been in D.C. for a month, and they're already bringing him on the TV talk shows weekly. It's the recipe for a career-ending gaffe by a neophyte politician. He'd be better off spending the next few years commuting back to his district on weekends.

Also, I expect that Pryor and Cotton have some common ground about North Korea's provocations. This looks like a good opportunity for some unity.

I'm with Tom Cotton and Dick Cheney on this. The proliferation of nuclear weapons should be suppressed. It kind of makes the problems of guns in church pale by comparison.
