However, I don't think they can see past their own noses. For them, it's unfathomable that anyone else's experience could be any less uplifting and rewarding than their own. They can't imagine what raising a child like theirs would be like for a single mother, who's maybe in her early twenties, and who has no insurance. Or for an older couple who already have four kids but who accidentally get pregnant later in life. They can't muster up enough empathy to put themselves in other people's shoes.

If they were angry, they might not want to see others in the same circumstances. Rather than anger, I think it's their naive and idyllic outlook on life with a disabled child that has brought them to this point.

I've always been proud to work with the legislature and to make what little contribution I've been able to make to the process in various capacities over the past three decades. But this session is off the hook. It is embarrassing bordering on despicable. The lack of basic, common respect for others is non-existent. Ignorance is rampant. You are so right about decisions being made and votes cast on emotion rather than reasoned analysis of which I'm afraid most of them are incapable.

There is little doubt in my mind that this legislature will go down in history as the most dysfunctional ever. My concern is that this will be the new norm.

"Oh how special. Our current legislative session want to pass more unconstitutional laws. Those receiving unemployment benefits do not get them because they were on their couch eating bons bons. They get them because they worked. They are also required to attend job training and prove they search for jobs weekly. I don't know about you but it's easy to grasp why jobs are difficult to find. They always are when the economy is down.

Now some want to subject Arkansas citizens to a search without probable cause too.
When Florida passed a similar measure, they spent more on drug testing than they saved in denial of benefits. The percent that tested positive for drug use was also lower than that of the general population, which shows job seekers are less likely to be using drugs. Now they are wasting even more tax dollars defending their unconstitutional measure in court. Those claiming to be 'fiscal conservatives' prove they are not.

People with actual "principles" would not forget taking an oath of office swearing that I will "support the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of Arkansas, and that I will faithfully discharge the duties of the office.... so help me God" less than a month after taking that very oath. It's sad to see so many have."
