The "owners of the Tech Park", i.e., research park subdivision of UAMS, are the people of Little Rock who were LIED to from the beginning about the sales tax and while I don't live in Little Rock anymore, I visit there, I spend money there, and I eat there on most Sundays, so I am impacted. Someone with a legal background need to go back and read all the hand-outs and door hangers for the "Tech Park" to see whether the whole park concept was misrepresented.

Noticed a couple of interesting points yesterday! Mary "I will interrupt u b4 u finish your question" Good states that this was never intended to be a project to attract high paying private sector jobs? Then why are taxpayers paying for this boondoggle? She also said "the owners of the Tech Park" decided to reappoint Jay to a five year appointment to the Board!! Who are the owners and where in the hell is this park?

I don't live in LR but have followed this debate for awhile. I have always believed the "tech park" was nothing more than a blatant land grab by UAMS. I used to admire Dr. Good but her behavior regarding the tech park ....excuse me, "research park" confirms what this really is. Her insistence that decent hard-working people be driven from their homes b/c some professor shouldn't have to drive more than 5 mins is really sad.

Assume for the sake of argument that the proposed tech park is a good idea in the abstract. (A debatable proposition, obviously.)

Even if it is, you've still got:

-A crumbling physical infrastructure, exacerbated by a natural gas industry that has enough legislators in its pocket to prevent the gas companies from ever paying an appropriate severance tax to fix the roads.
-No light rail and horrible mass transit.
-Mediocre (at best) internet and cell phone infrastructure.
-A cost of living that is way out of line with average wages.
-A woefully undereducated population, especially in areas of math and science.
-A legislature that has shown no signs of addressing any of the above because they are far too concerned with fetal heartbeats, guns in church, and other shit that we shouldn't be wasting time on.

Now, given this, what company in their right might would relocate to a LR tech park, knowing they'll have to convince would-be employees to move to Little Rock?

Time for citizens of Little Rock to stand up and slap down the Little Rock elected officials. AGAIN!

A replay of the 90's again.

In the 90's the city tried to take citizen's tax money to rape a city park to create an expressway OUT OF TOWN so private corporate bigwigs could commute to their horsefarms out in the county and not have to mix with the hoi poloi. (funny this is the same private corporate bigwigs that cashed in big and cutloose thousands of Little Rock families into unemployment in the worst job market in living history) My street alone had 2 Alltel families that seemed happy and yet within 2 years had divorced.

Citizens stood up and slapped down the City Board and we how have a Murray Park and Big Dam Bridge that is the envy of America.

For 20 years citizens REFUSED to give any more damn money to the City to screw citzens with.

For 20 years the City Board wailed and gnashed their teeth that they had learned their lesson and swore up down and whined that the past transgression was a previous board and this board was all different people and we could now thrust them.

LR citizens agreed that for LR to progress we need to tax ourselves and trust the City again.

Then 1st horse out of the gate is this boondoggle/scam. Or is it better termed scam/boondoggle?

Get ready people! After this latest sin against taxpayers plays out we will probably deny any taxes to LR for another 20 years.

The City will become pothole swiss cheese roads. Police and fire jobs will go vacant through attrition. Parks will be whittled away 10 or 20 acres at a time.

But the biggest raping will be whole neighborhoods neglected like Forrest Hills and fall in horrible delcine.

THEN THE DECLINE CASUED BY CITY NEGLECT WILL BE USED AS AN ARGUMENT TO BULLDOZE THOSE LAZY 47% TAKERS AND THEIR HOMES to once again build some wacky private corporate boondoggle/scam that will only enrich developers that did not have to risk a penny of their own money.

If this Tech Park or Research Park or Scam Park is such a great thing, why is the LR taxpayer the one putting up Multi Millions?

Answer the last question yourself.

Norma, I was discussing this with my brother the other day. He lives near Austin. His advice to Rick Perry: Tell any businesses you lure here to bring their own water.

The California tax hike passed last November by about 55-45. The wealthiest counties in California voted overwhelmingly for it. They value their education system and they value the amenities higher taxes bring. Could we call them enlightened and self-interested? The tax hike is for 7 years by which time they should have solved their budget problems.
Silicon Valley is humming along with more start-ups and venture capital pooring in.

State orginizations UAMS & UALR (UU)plus private org Childrens(C) can help private industry take UUC research to market.

Where is the city in this?

High paying jobs don't help LR since LR doesn't have an income tax.

Sales taxes would DECREASE when hundreds of homes are leveled and the actual spenders scatter across the area.

Why would Little Rock want to attract geeks that get carsick and are afraid of heights?

What else explains max 5 minute car ride and max 4 story buildings?

I will now answer my own original question.

Why would LR pay for this?

Because noone that has looked at the business plan would invest their own money.

Okay. So now the story has changed. Not a "high-tech" park to attract cutting-edge 21st Century businesses and jobs to The Rock and The Natural State.

A "research park."

Or something.

Which reminds me.

Gov. Rick Perry of The Lone Star State next door to y'all is another perfect example of the pie-in-the-sky Southerner who's all let's-revitalize-Main-Street (for the last 50 years).

After bad-mouthing California and bragging how Texas would raid lots of Golden State entrepreneurs, aging Levis pinup Perry returns home empty-handed.

And still lying, as usual. Perry promised some 200 unidentified business were lined up to hear him.

20 showed.

They're lookin' away, lookin' away in droves, Dixieland.

If your taxpayers cared a genuine hoot about your state they'd fund better educations for your sons and daughters, for starters. And I don't mean Walton / Koch charters.

Instead, real estate developers are picking taxpayers' pockets to line their own.

Promises, promises.
They need to go back to their envisioning place, because as currently envisioned, it feels like all Little Rock is getting is the shaft.

Perhaps they should have named it the "Little Rock Research Park" instead of a technology park. Most of the comparable projects cited by the authority on their website are named as "Research Parks" if that is their primary function.

Too late now. This project is out of control.

Were the city voters sold a pig-in-a-poke that the "tech Park" is just an extension of the existing UAMS and Children's growing research center at a possible sub-commercial scale? I think the people voting thought they were voting for an industrial tech park with real companies and hopefully, a large number of real jobs.

Let them spend some money, make all their horiizontal parking vertical and use what they haven't totally screwed up of the baseball field as the first building location and then prove that they can develop a commercial product that pays the bills before they get a 2nd building. This is beginning to look like another Chamber sink hole to throw resident's money for someone's commercial profit (e.g., socialism!).

Why don't they just stop this farce, vote to use eminent domain to take the Forrest Hill site, and get the legal proceedings going? All they are doing is dragging this out in some pipe dream that people will stop going to these meetings and stop paying attention if enough time passes. In the meantime, supporters of the various 3 sites (of which the downtown site is obviously the best, IMHO) continue to waste their time lobbying and going to these meetings.

Mary Good was a graduate student at the U of A when I was an undergraduate. She got her Ph.D. in 1955. I graduated as an undergraduate in 1954, and I was younger than the usual undergraduate. You all now that I am older than the hills, and she has to be older than I am. Senility is bound to be creeping in, and so my question is: Why is she serving as chairman of this important Authority, and what made her think that she is God?
