Why do I, a thoroughly liberal white male, secretly enjoy the thought of the Republicans getting their butts kicked by the ever-increasing numbers of women and minority voters? Their new "tent" seems to be constructed to house rich Republicans who are white on the inside but slightly brown elsewhere, and nobody else.

Slingerland, a bit more follow up. This bill deals strictly with what is known as voter impersonation fraud. It has nothing to do with other types of fraud that actually do occur at times, for example absentee ballot fraud.

In the past dozen years or so there have only been a handful of federally prosecuted cases nationwide of such voter impersonation fraud. On a national level!

I think the penalty if you are caught is up to 5 years in jail and up to a $10,000 fine. And if you manage to get away with the crime, you have added one vote in an election whose outcome may or may not hinge on that one vote. Or you could hope to get multiple people to engage in voter impersonation fraud and hope none of them get caught and none of them have too much to drink some night and brag as drunks are known to do.

No, voter impersonation is a lousy way to try to steal an election, even a local one. Far too much risk for far too little reward. Better to wirelessly change votes in an electronic voting machine as computer scientists have proven can be easily done. We have far more to fear from electronic voting machines that don't leave an auditable trail- and don't get audited randomly following elections where we could catch such massive fraud. That's where the Herr Karl Roves of the world steal elections.

SP, thank you for the response, I truly appreciate it. I wasn't aware of the difference where the benefit programs allowed a range of IDs, while the voter bill was so specific. While I might give the concept the benefit of the doubt, a bad bill needs to be killed.

Jake, while I see your comment that there has been no real show of voter ID fraud, is it not reasonable to believe it does happen at times and that both parties are guilty? Isn't that why the first Iraqi election required voters to dip their fingers in blue ink to prevent fraud? Most of my professional life has been spent designing fraud-detection software so perhaps I'm biased towards a more secure system.

SP, FYI, I'm not a fulltime landlord, I'm still employed in the government medical field. I work about 60 hours a week between the two, so I understand what you mean about "free time."

jake, they may call for smaller government but it always grows like topsy under Republicans because you need all those vagina inspectors, bedroom inspectors, ID checkers, prayer book checkers, teacher checkers, and yet, with all the mass of humanity at the capitol, there hasn't been shown one tiny gram (that's a scientific term for Republicans) of humanity by any of the 135 assembled idiots.

And they have wasted 1 of the two months they have to meet. We need them to take one of those 37 proposed Constitutional amendments and have it read to meet for 10 days every 2 years and any effort beyond that will not be compensated for and in addition, no per diem and no milage. Maybe some of these "citizens" will actually go and get a real job instead of being a professional socialist teat sucker. And they worry about someone on the pitiful low amount this state pays in welfare!!!

      Good response, SP!

Poll Tax was the Southern Democrats caging technique in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when the Supreme Court overturned its previous ruling in 1966. Now the new South's ex-Dixiecrats dominance has devised a new caging technique of photo id to defeat that most terrible of voter fraud, aka beating Republicans.

Slingerland, I assume your comment re IDs (and strangely government benefits?) was in reference to the voter ID bill. Senate Bill 2, the so-called voter ID bill, would require every voter to have a specific form of ID noted in the legislation in order to vote. A large number of lower-and middle-income Arkansan voters don't have those IDs. Does that disqualify them from their constitutional right to vote? Only to Arkansas Talibaptists.

Loser income folks, many of whom don't own cars because we pay them a miserably low wage, would have to be able to get somewhere by taxi, bus, borrowed vehicle, family member, etc. And this so-called "free voter ID" may itself be free, but what if you have to pay to get a copy of your birth certificate or other required document before you could go stand in yet another line someplace else to get that "free voter ID"? And what if you work for a living and can't just take off whenever you have personal errands to run, like say a landlord? I assume you don't consider your time as valuable. You realize most Arkansans don't have the luxury of time you and I have, don't you?

What I'm asking is something like this: so far as I can research, any government benefit... whether Social Security, SNAP, WICS, TANF, Medicare... requires an ID. As far as I can tell. So I'm wondering where all the "poor people without IDs" are.
It's a legitimate question.

How does a Republican come up with a bill where there's no evidence it is needed? None, nada, zip, and zilch. Whereas voter suppression is 1000 times more prevalent.

It's a Republican specialty. Provide more government interference into the rights and privileges of US citizens -- not for the sake of the country, but for the sake of their party.

Republicans: born paranoid, living paranoid, dying paranoid.

"Republicans have yet to produce a shred of evidence of in-person voter impersonation."

Of course they haven't produced any because there is none, but as we have seen this session Republicans don't actually need evidence or science for any BS law they want to pass.
Hell even when you point out that they are wrong or that their legislation will do more harm (like making abortions harder to get means in the end middle class and upper class Baptist/Catholic women can still get their abortions. OR the harder you make it for a Doctors who perform abortions there are less OBGYNs trained in abortions (D&Es) which means that as we move along there will be less and less OBGYNs who will be experianced in performing D&Es whoich are necessary after a good amount of miscarriages. This means women will die, but whats a few women as long as THE BABIES are OK.) then good they don't care because JESUS and THOSE OTHER PEOPLE and THE BABIES.

Seriously I just don't understand how "prolife" folks can not see what there are doing to women's health care in this country.

Here's a question... and I mean it honestly... how does a "poor person" get on government benefits without an ID?

My mother had to produce a birth certificate and DL to get her Social Security. Social Security is rarely paid by check, but by direct deposit... and to get a bank account she had to produce a SS card and driver's license.

So I mean this as an honest question because I don't know... how does a poor person get government benefits without providing an ID? Or are we talking about people who have no benefits?

Sign me confused...
