I used to work security (basically inspecting bags and confiscating bottles of booze at the turnstile) at the Razorback games in Little Rock and would be amazed at the incredible amount of liquor people would bring just for themselves. Sometimes, I'd see someone desperately drinking down their hootch before they got to the head of the line. We'd always fill up a huge plastic bin with the confiscated booty. No, I don't know what happened to the bin, but you'd have to be a pretty darned desperate alky to want to drink people's dregs and backwash. I would have confiscated Bowie knives or pistols but I never saw anything beyond a pocketknife the entire time.

No one should object to searches before going into public gatherings where large crowds of people will be assembled. It only makes sense. Of course, unlike Louie, I would never have attempted to smuggle alcohol into a Razorback game, and I sure as hell would have had more brains than to try to carry in a cooler full of beer. Those guys must have been fraternity boys, Louie.

Hell, why let ANYONE in the "stadium" except teams, coaches, umps and radio/teevee personnel? Let the fans sit in the parking lot and listen to/look at the bimbotron. That would free the Homeland Security wannabees from all that tedious work of opening purses and diaper bags.

When I attended my first football game as a student at 'The University,' there were some guys in line ahead of me. They were lugging a cooler, apparently full of beer and ice and mixers, and one had a George Dickel 'Powderhorn' half-gallon of whiskey slung over his shoulder. I quickly learned to take a flask to games.
Problem: after a few drinks I'd get dizzy when I jumped up to call the Hawgs.
Those were the days. Even Cato was known to take a drink upon occasion.

Over the past several years, my wife & I have had the opportunity to attend a variety of athletics events, concerts, festivals, etc. locally and in many places across the country. Our experience? The practice of searching bags before allowing entry is much, much more prevalent below the Mason-Dixon line than above it. Last summer we took a vacation where we attended 3 baseball games and one concert in four different northern cities. We were not searched once! Upon returning home...heading to the local baseball venue...you got it - searched at the gate. This has nothing to do with safety...it has everything to do with perpetuating the culture of fear that drives so many of today's popular, politically-charged agendas. Distract people with meaningless gestures and they will be oblivious to issues that truly matter.
