Daniel, not to confuse you with the facts, but (from the CDC for 2010):

All homicides: Number of deaths: 16,259

Firearm homicides: Number of deaths: 11,078

Just over 68% of all homicides in the U.S. in 2010 were by firearms. The remaining just under 32% of homicides were by all other methods- stabbing, drowning, hit in the head with a golf ball, hit over the head with a brick or rock, pushed out of an airplane, heart attack after listening to a ReTHUGlicon Arkansas legislator pontificate, etc.

We had a real Chablis for Valentines Day, it was a Grand Cru Chablis from Burgundy, France, and not the great Chablis Blanc that E&J Gallo peddles. Not bragging, just updating my Beginners Look At Wine Seminar and compared the old to the current. The imported upscale crowd will be ordering a Pinot Grigio if not a Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc. Wine lists in some of these clubs in dry counties contain three wines
1. Red Wine
3. Rose (Pink) Wine
I'll upvote Dan E. because I think this blog could use a little more Libertarianism, however bass-ackwards. If the numbers say booze and cheeseburgers kill more people than guns do, where's the outrage? Personal choice?

Many more people are hurt each year because of kids getting into their parents' liquor cabinets than their gun cabinets.

Let's face it, gun deaths are within the range of a rounding error compared to other social ills. We're content to let the poor rot with poor nutrition, for instance. But when a few suburban white kids die suddenly, despite the best food and education and nurturing environment, the problem must be addressed.

And where has Obama taken his 'stop the madness' crusade? To the 'hood. I'm not sure if he's using Newtown to get something done about black-on-black violence, or if he and Newtown are being used by ever-fearful white folk to do something about taking guns off the street, meaning away from folks they fear but rarely come across. Pandering or racism or just emotional politicking? Pick your public policy poison.

Get your kids off the phone while behind the wheel and you'll being doing more to protect them, and each other, than rallying about guns in America. Whatever you do, don't cite gun death numbers elsewhere. Apples and oranges. If you want to be really, helplessly afraid -- and appreciate how good we've got it -- work yourself up about the rampant corruption in Russia and the monolithic arrogance of China.

But since all politics is local: bitch less, do more. Like itmor not, the guys with the votes win.

      Dan E.

No one defends drunk driver's rights to hurtle around on public roadways.

As a matter of fact the drunk driver problem has been steadily attacked for decades. It is improving but has a long way to go.

Even though there are nearly as many guns as people in the US most guns go untoughed for months at a time by most people PLUS most people ride in vehicles many times every day so a logical person would expect more vehicle deaths.

Plus most would agree that a higher percentage of drunks would be of a mind to get in a vehicle than grab a gun.

So don't confuse hypocrit with statistics.

I don't think I have touched any of my guns since back in December.

I can, and have been able to avoid drunks on the roadway up till now. At least I do have a bit of a chance to do that.

A dropped pistol in a cleaners or a restaurant by a CONCEILED carrier I have less ability to avoid.

But boy if you want to see me disappear like vapor, just pull out a gun. I don't like putting my life in other's hands, they often don't value my life quite as highly as I do.

The only ones that can look the camera in the eye and ask for gun restrictions are politicians who actively seek ways to increase the number of dry counties in America.

2nd Amendment > 21st Amendment. Both are legal, Both have hundreds of laws against their misuse. Yet Alcohol was noted in 900,000 child abuse cases, and more people die from drunk drivers then by Semi-Auto Rifles in the order of 10 times more.

Proof that the liberal media doesn't care about saving lives, just about control. They love their wine, and ignore all the bad press about it. But hate Semi-Auto Rifles even though most have never shot one or owned one.

Hypocrites.... You don't understand that once they start taking away freedom, in the name of public safety, they'll focus on other things next. Soon you'll need a permit to buy a beer and a national tracking database will track number of beers you buy each night. I mean that would save thousands of lives...

There is a major similarity between gun control laws and Alcohol control laws.

Maybe, once the ethics initiative gets passed -- hah! -- the organization can launch a petition to let the market, not bribery, set the price of a bottle of beer. Or of a nice, unassuming Sonoma red...

Big beer distributors love to have dry counties

That way they deliver to a couple places in 1 wet county and then the people from dry areas drive to those stores. Thus a dist has centralized outlets and customers come to it.

Plus that way they can have little insulated empires free from one Bud distributor attacking another Bud distributor. If there are dry counties separating wet counties you don't have any war at the borders.

And dry Sundays are loved by all liquor store owners. You get a day off and your competition can't suck away your customers.

Same total sales per week but only open 6 days.

Sweet tea with dinner! If it's good enough for us, it's good enough for everybody.

Max, I had it on pretty reliable authority, during one of our many unsuccessful wet elections up here in the hills, that the onerously high petition requirements for an alcohol election were promoted by the big beer distributors, who didn't want to have to right a rebound election as soon as they finally got a county to go wet. Unlike the wet election, which is county-wide, the dry recall elections can proceed precinct by precinct.
