Excellent article mag. I highly recommend it. Without re checking the story I know hospitals have four levels of prices:

1. No insurance price they can take to bankruptcy court or soak the patient.
2. Insur price
3.Medicare price
4.Medicaid price

      Gyl: nope.

You're thinking of the "doc fix." These are cuts to reimbursements for hospitals, as well as insurance companies (re: Medicare Advantage). While it's theoretically true that a future Congress could un-do some part of the law (on cost side or savings side), there's no "fix" coming for hospitals, who are already absorbing cuts in Medicare reimbursements. In fact, the thing that was supposed to offset the haircut for hospitals was...expansion. That was the deal.

Spend part of your afternoon reading this: http://healthland.time.com/2013/02/20/bitt…

TIME magazine's cover story titled "Bitter Pill." Whether or not you buy the whole story, you will learn that the right question to ask is why medical bills cost so much. Our whole argument is over who will pay for them instead of why they are so high. This leaves the over-charging medical industry laughing at all of us.

After reading it I still conclude that the Medicare expansion is a no-brainer "yes" vote. At least Medicare has the power to negotiate ridiculously overcharged bills down to a reasonable rate. We not only will get more Arkansans medical care - we will get them more care at a lower rate.

Gyl, research your question and get back to us with the answer. Ya hear?

Question- could Davy Carter by an old-fashioned Republican, you know the kind who didn't wince when science and facts were an integral part of public policy making? Or will he turn out to be nothing more than a smarter ReTHUGlicon than the dim bulbs like Bryan King, Nate Bell, Jason Rape, etc. Stay tuned.

Are those the same Medicare reimbursement rate cuts that Congress has been overriding since 2002?

if Carter says he is "absolutely convinced" that the nation can’t afford the healthcare law, the burden is on him to explain why.<<

Republicans are autocrats. They never have to explain anything. In fact, it's in their interest to lie about it because there's rarely major media to call out their lies. In Ark, Repubs own all the major media.

I understand political maneuvering and political games. Living in Arkansas for over 70 years if a person is observant, it's expected at some level. But our new majority in the Arkansas Legislature seems to be bring ignorance to a new level. Spending all this time on legislation written for them and funded by the same folks. It shouldn't have taken them this long to pass those "important" bills. I guess I forgot to factor in the amount of time they felt they should spend patting themselves on the back. Now they want a consultant to review the medicare/medicaid. I guess that's just a reinforcement that reading, comprehending, and making decisions regarding what is read, is not a strong point of the majority in this year's Legislature. They've had 3 months to read the reports. They probably don't believe that Arkansas has one of the better run programs in the nation. But I guess that's what it's come down to : belief trumps facts

The impact on government budgets, whether federal or state, is the answer to the wrong question. The right question is: How much do American citizens have left in their pockets at the end of the year?

Our current health system has left the American citizenry in indentured servitude to the medical/pharmacological/insurance aristocracy, paying twice as much for half as much (the WHO rates us 21st in the world). Make us rich, they tell us, or we will let you and your children suffer and die.

Someone needs to tell Little Davy that it's not a question of what the federal government can afford.
