Gonna wear this subject out but I thought of a couple other things.

Did you know that Kenneth Starr went to Harding for a while? When I first heard that, my first reaction was "why am I not surprised?".

The book I mentioned earlier IS available on Amazon. Do you think they'd pay me a penny if I provided the link? Probably not, so find it yourself.

I am trying to find my copy of the book to verify the disputed yield of the bomb as discussed before. I haven't found it yet. It's been several years since I've read it but I remember quite a bit about it because I once wrote a poem about the Titan II missile for a class I took for fun at UALR. I know, I know. Ain't that just like a liberal to attempt poetry about a weapon system? You know how many words rhyme with "thermonuclear"? Fortunately, the prof wasn't real big on rhymes anyway.

Guilt is another big thing with liberals so here's the link payoff or not.

http://www.amazon.com/Titan-Tales-Diary-Missile-Commander/dp/0965554600/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1361861775&sr=1-1&keywords=titan+tales

One funny review of the book from Amazon sounds like it could have been written by one of our resident trolls:

"if this is the major womack that i'm thinking of, i was on a crew with him. i wouldn't buy the book as i wouldn't want to advantage him in any way as i thought that he was a jerk."

Our son was a competitive swimmer back in the 90s. In the meets against the Searcy Sharks at Harding, the Little Rock Dolphin boys had to swim at different times than the girls.
Harding would not let boys and girls in their pool at the same time. That was the only venue where that was an issue, ever. It reminded me of Iran. Religious wack jobs. Road trip?

I didn't say that ALL OF them were around Searcy. There were at least 3 of them within about 10 miles of Searcy and several more within 40 miles. We know, in retrospect, that Soviet ICBM's of that era were wildly inaccurate so, really, anywhere in Arkansas was probably at risk. They only had one really, really reliable missile and it was aimed at Harding College. OK, that part's a joke, don't get on me.

I didn't get the 20 megaton figure from my usual source i.e. roughly half-way down my body on the dorsal side. I got it from a book, Titan Tales: Diary Of A Titan II Missile Crew Commander by retired Air Force Major John H. Womack. He was commander of a silo near Searcy (he never said which one). He said that at the time the book was written that the size of the thermonuclear device hadn't yet been declassified but he wasn't afraid to say that the yield was somewhere between 20 and 21 megatons. I can't say whether that was right or wrong, but if you're in an area hit by one of these, it probably wouldn't make a whole lot of difference whether it was a 9 or a 20.

I doubt that the book is still in print but you might find a used one on Amazon. Regardless of the size of the weapon, the book is a very interesting read for any of us who grew up in the area.

I lived in Searcy for the 1st 20 years or so of my life. I still have relatives there but I doubt if I'll ever move back.

The problem with Searcy has always been Harding College. George Benson was the college president in the 50's and he scared everybody off with all his anti-communist carrying-on. I'm surprised he didn't accuse Joe McCarthy of being soft on communism. He scared all us Searcy kids to death because, according to Benson, Harding College was so feared by the Ruskies that we'd be the first target in any nuclear war. Then to make it even worse, in the early sixties, the Air Force surrounded our little town with Titan II missile silos, each carrying a tidy little 20-megaton hydrogen bomb. I'm surprised we weren't all nervous wrecks.

The Church of Christ itself caused a lot of resentment even among other Christian denominations. They were THE Church and referred to themselves as THE SAVED.
Naturally, there were several other of "the one true religions" around town too. Yet another thing to worry about for us kids: you had to pick your church wisely cause the consequences were going to be horrible if you picked the wrong one. Everybody knew that Hell was gonna take up several square miles and Heaven, at most, half an acre. Yeah, Searcy was a lot of fun.

I gotta give Harding credit on one thing though. They banned dancing because it was only 1 small step from fornication. I always doubted it 'til many years later, Pfizer came out with those Viagra commercials on TV. Viagra allows you to dance again. Gotta give credit where credit's due.

I think this survey was a bit skewed by some pranksters. Well done, tho.

Back in my college days (early 1960's), a group from LRU went to a chemistry talk at Harding. It was in one of those elevated study hall auditoriums and as we were leaving, one of the group had a "church key" fall out of his pocket and loudily clang as it fell down step after step. Do they still have the swings on campus with the spotlights on the front and back of those using the swings?

When I was teaching high school and we played Harding in football, we arrived early and enjoyed Little B's Mexican. They later opened another restaurant in Conway. I haven't been to Searcy in years exccept for a funeral wake since Conway is eqwual distance and offers more connections.
