Years ago there was a church in Colorado Springs where a perp started to shoot up a church. He was engaged by a female volunteer concealed carry security guard who put a prompt end to his rampage. It doesn't happen often, but lives were certainly saved. Arkansas was behind the times in not allowing concealed carry in churches. It is allowed in the vast majority of other states.

ProCarry, where did you read about 265 violent crimes? What constituted a violent crime? Do all violent crimes require the use of firearms in response? Got any evidence? Relevant evidence? I'm looking for evidence directly related to the issue of mass shootings in churches.

I contend it matters much whether someone is using an ax or a gun. You can run from an ax. You can't run from a bullet.

Prove to me that it's "far less likely that mass murders will occur" in spaces where concealed carry is allowed. Where's your evidence? I would contend that since the vast majority of mass shootings are carried out by mentally deranged persons, it makes no difference whether the shooter is in a "gun free" zone or not.

But the fact remains, there has never been a mass shooting in a church in Arkansas. Your odds of being in one, even considering national occurrences, are infinitesimal. And opening up churches to concealed carry only increases the risk of accidental shootings and, should an incident occur, innocents being killed by cross fire or accidental mis-identification of the shooter, or simple confusion in the heat of the moment.

At one point I read that there were 265 violent crimes committed in one year on churches in this country, many of them in Arkansas. It matters little whether your murderer is using an axe or a gun. If you have a gun, use it. Also, 40 other states allow concealed carry in church, making it far less likely that mass murders will occur there. All but one mass murder in the last 50 years have occurred in "gun free" zones.

There was an armed robbery at at least one Little Rock church last year - might have been two of them. Needless to say, it happens. Most of these incidents occur during after-hours, when only a preacher or secretary is present. What's so radical about a bill that says, "we're getting government out of church business"?

I've been looking online and even the proponents of concealed carry don't list a church shooting in Arkansas. There's evidently never been one. While I certainly don't wish for anyone to have the first one, the evidence that we need concealed weapons in churches is infinitesimal and anecdotal. And there's absolutely no evidence to show that concealed carry is a bona fide solution to this so-called problem.

Thanks for the articles ProCarry, but neither of them refer to gun violence in churches. Can anyone reading this provide evidence of a shooting incident in a church during a worship service? Or even during the week?

It seems to me that the odds of this happening are so minuscule that it really isn't worth all this energy. It may be that the odds of it happening in Arkansas are, at least historically, zero.

      Another interesting point:

It's already obvious which churches in the state have members which support conceal/carry. Probably a substantial number can be found in Baptist churches, Pentecostal, Methodist (to a lesser extent, surely), Church of Christ, etc.

It will be interesting to see how these churches deal with the issue. For instance, which Baptist churches will become pro carry? In conversation will they be referred to as a "gun church?" For example: "Oh that Baptist church on 3rd street? Yeah, they're a 'gun church.'"

I forsee a point where there may be denominational and church splits taking place in right wing congregations over the issue. "Gun Churches" will be labeled as more conservative and "Anti Gun Churches" labeled as more liberal. This issue may actually go a long way toward breaking up some right wing religion strongholds in the state.

How many pro conceal/carry members will a denomination or church lose if it refuses to become a "gun church?" Will the pro conceal/carry then start their own church/denomination or simply move to a "gun church?" How many churches are willing to be known as a "gun church?"

This is going to be interesting.

Beebe signed the bills because he knew it would accomplish nothing other than to appease the base of the Republican majority in the Assembly. There has been zero gun violence in Arkansas churches to justify the bill in the first place.

And yes, it makes a very strong statement about the churches that do feel the need to bring guns into their sanctuaries. So much for "turn the other cheek," and "he who lives by the sword..." Christ's original message has been so perverted by the institutionalization of Christianity that anyone practicing its original admonishments today would be arrested as cultists.

Trust me, Jesus would have had a lot to say today about the Gospel of Wealth, guns in churches, Christians getting involved in government, anti-gay-for-pay Christian activists, etc. And none of it would have been good.

See, here's the rub: "But churches like mine and others in the area that feel like we should have some sort of security in place..."

Well, why not hire a security guard in a uniform for 20 bucks? Problem solved.

Instead, juvenile gun nutz have shoved religion INTO the state.

And the rest of the country laughs. How does this new law bring new and better paying jobs to the state, exactly?

I am confused. How does allowing the church to make its own decision "impose" upon the church? I would think that the imposition would be when the state dictates to you what you can't do. But, then again that's a woman for you!
