When I read his columns, I always thought to myself that I should write and tell him how much I enjoyed them. They were amazing -- such an unusual way of saying anything and everything. Sometimes, I practically fell off the bed because I was laughing so hard at some of his off-the-wall comments.

I am sad to hear that he has retired -- must be nice for him but you could never replace him!
This will, perhaps, make me sound like a fan-boy, but I always got a bit of a thrill every time one of my dining reviews would appear a few pages before Bob's column, which was usually the first thing I'd read in any given issue.

I can't say he made me want to be a writer, but he certainly made me want to be a better one, and he's one of the big reasons I jumped at the chance to contribute to the Times.
