What is so rare as a day in May when you'll need a coat for Gallery Walk? Bundle up anyway for the monthly after-hours gallery event in Hot Springs, where you'll see:

Plein-air paintings in an exhibition called "Saving Our Heritage: Arkansas' Historic Structures," at the Fine Arts Center, 626 Central; new paintings by Marc Hatfield and raku by Kelly Edwards at Blue Moon Fine Art, 718 Central; paintings by Fabio Inverni at Gallery Central, 800 Central; Sheliah Halderman pastels and Teresa Widdifield paintings at Artists Workshop Gallery, 810 Central; and "Fresh Paint," work by Rene Hein, Dolores Justus, Rebecca Thompson and Emily Wood at Justus Fine Art, 827 Central. Check out Taylor's Contemporanea at 204 Exchange St. and other galleries as well.

Artchurch Studio at 301 Whittington is showing its final exhibition at that locale, "Artchurch Studio: Retrospective," featuring artwork by artists who've shown over the past five years at the gallery. The gallery is changing its name to Emergent Arts and moving to the 4,000-square-foot Dryden Potteries building at 341 Whittington Ave. Emergent Arts will collaborate with the Drydens to offer ceramics classes, and the new space, to open in September, will include a performing arts studio as well as galleries and visual arts classrooms.

Lots of good art to see in Hot Springs tonight, as galleries will stay open 5-9 p.m. for the monthly walk up and down Central Avenue and vicinity.

"The Warren Criswell Show" opens tonight at Taylor's Contemporanea; Criswell will be at the gallery for tonight's reception. Justus Fine Art at 827 Central Ave. in Hot Springs opens the show "Abstracts," ceramics by Michael Ashley, paintings by Donnie Copeland and Vivian Noe-Griffith and paintings and sculpture by Robyn Horn.

A show of sculpture by Wayne Summerhill continues at Blue Moon Art Gallery. Gallery Central, which recently had a visit, through the plate glass window, by a deer, has patched that up and is showing work by Bob Snider, Paige Moorhead and Jennifer Wilson, the gallery's Facebook page indicates.

Sculpture, textiles, painting and valentines are showcased in tonight's Gallery Walk in Hot Springs, 5-9 p.m. along Central Avenue.

Blue Moon Art Gallery (718 Central) is showing sculpture by Hot Springs artist Wayne Summerhill in a show called "Steel Creations." Gallery Central (800 Central) is featuring paintings of Hot Springs and race-themed work by Tracee Gentry-Matthews. At Justus Fine Art (827 Central), paintings by Donnie Copeland, Robyn Horn, Dolores Justus, Emily Wood and Rebecca Thompson and textiles by Jennifer Libby Fay are showcased. Alison Parsons is showing her hand-painted valentines at her gallery (802 Central) and Gallery 726 (726 Central) is featuring the work of gallery owners Shirley Anderson, Barbara Seibel, Caryl Joy Young and Sue Shields, aka "The Monday Group." Taylor's Contemporanea Salon is showing work by Darrell Loy Scott, Warren Criswell and others.

Tonight's Gallery Walk in Hot Springs should be pretty lively, with lots of new artists on exhibit at galleries on and just off Central Avenue. Here goes:

Gerald Lee Delavan's kinetic mobile structures are featured at Alison Parsons Fine Art (802 Central Ave.) in a show titled “In Perfect Balance-Metals in Motion.” Delavan, a guest artist in Parsons' gallery, uses natural materials such as geodes and semiprecious stones, custom lamp glass beads and found objects on frameworks of aluminum and copper tubing and wiring.

Gallery Central's featured artist for December is watercolorist Charles Harrington, and the gallery is also showing paintings by Jacqueline Ellens, Janis Wylie and Jennifer Wilson. (800 Central Ave.)

Multimedia media collages by Kelly Moran, the featured artist, as well as ceramics by Polly Cook, Nat Mitchell and John Wolfe; photographs by Thomas Petillo, Chuck Dodson and Marcus Menefee, and paintings by Warren Criswell, John Robinette, Darrell Loy Scott, Daniel Mark Cassity, James Wu and others, are on exhibit at Taylor's Contemporanea (204 Exchange St.)

Dolores Justus Fine Art (827 A Central) is featuring new paintings by Rebecca Thompson and Justus, along with new jewelry and Christmas ornaments by Kari Albright and Jay Justus.

Artchurch (301 Whittington) and the Fine Arts Center are hosting group shows "Wintertide."

The lineup for Hot Springs Gallery Walk from 5-9 p.m. Friday night includes a variety of media: paintings, glass ornaments, tiles and quilts, all along Central Avenue.

At Justus Fine Art (827 A Central Ave.), new paintings by Vivian Noe-Griffith, Dolores Justus and artwork by many other gallery artists will be on exhibit. Randall Good's work remains at Blue Moon Gallery (718 Central Ave.); he'll give a talk at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Personalized blown glass ornaments by James Hayes and "spiritiles" by Houston Llew are the draw at Gallery Central (800 Central). Quilts by Martha Maples, fiber art by Donna Dunnahoe and glass and multi-media work by Patty Collins are featured in "Nature Transformed" at the Hot Springs Fine Arts Center (626 Central Ave.)

Artchurch is having its second reception for its "Dia de Los Muertos" show, which features Day of the Dead themed artwork by regional artists and a 15-by-25-foot, community-created ofrenda or altar. A young dance group, Mindset, will also perform at Artchurch.

Tonight at Taylor's: Moran, Petillo, Allen

This just in (thank you, Carolyn!): Taylor's Contemporanea, Salon of Fine Art, at 204 Exchange St. in Hot Springs is featuring the work of the late, great Al Allen; Houston mixed media artist Kelly Moran, and Nashville photographer Thomas Petillo. Taylor artists Warren Criswell, Polly Cook, Daniel Mark Cassity, etc., will have work on exhibit as well.

The gallery will be open tonight from 5-9 p.m. for the monthly Hot Springs Gallery Walk, mentioned earlier here.

Twice in a Blue Moon: Suzi Dennis

Multimedia works by Suzi Dennis ("sUZI mADE") continue this August at Blue Moon Gallery, which hosts its Gallery Walk reception Friday, Aug. 3, from 5-9 p.m., under the first full moon in August. The second full moon comes Aug. 30 so it is — you guessed it — a Blue Moon!

The gallery is at 718 Central; you won't be standing alone on Friday night. Other participating galleries: Alison Parsons Gallery, 802 Central, which is featuring Gabrielle Ray's installation "Left" and large-scale oils, and Artchurch Studio, 301 Whittington Ave, which has works by Bethannie Newsom Steelman, Erin Holliday, Terri Taylor, Alex Oberste and Robynn and Morgan Sheets, age 2. Miss Andie's Dancers will perform. At Gallery Central, 800 Central, paintings by Jason Gammell and Tracee Gentry will be on view; Justus Fine Art, 827 Central will have work by Dolores Justus, Donnie Copeland, Steve Griffith, Mike Elsass, Robyn Horn and others; and the Fine Arts Center, 626 Central, is holding its first annual juried photography show (awards presented during Gallery Walk).

Alert! MOCA will not be open for Gallery Walk; the newspaper listing is incorrect. It's got a new show of work of Carole Katchen; catch it another time.

It's Gallery Walk night in Hot Springs tonight from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. I posted yesterday about "sUZI mADE" at Blue Moon Gallery. Here's what else is on tap: Alison Parsons Gallery (802 Central Ave.) is showing "Left," large-scale oil sketches, and an installation by Gabrielle Ray. Artchurch Studio (301 Whittington) is showing Buzz Blur, Jeri Hilis, Nichole Briscoe, Marc Menefee, Dan Grissom, Susan Julie Gonzales, Terri Taylor, Michael Bradley, Christopher Baber, John W. Williams and Alex Oberste and will also feature a dance performance by Miss Andie's Dancers and music by Laura Lee Williard. Gallery Central (800 Central) is showing work by its gallery artists, including new artists Sandy Newberg and Amy Hill-Imler. Artist's Workshop Gallery features paintings by Terry Odell and Joanne Kunath. Other galleries on and off Central include Justus Fine Art, Taylor's Contemporanea and the American Art Gallery.

Daniel Mark Cassity at Taylor's Contemporanea

Taylor's Contemporanea, 204 Exchange St., is hosting an exhibit of photorealist paintings by Louisiana artist Daniel Mark Cassity. Cassity, who works in oil on panel, will show 20 still lifes that combine disparate objects — a shell, a toy pig, a meat cleaver — "to evoke humor" or tell a story. Gallery walk reception is 6-9 p.m. tonight.

The work begs to be compared with the still lifes of Daniel Massad on exhibit at the Arkansas Arts Center. The skill with which Massad's pastels are rendered — down to the slight freckles on the pears, the glazes on the bowls — is nearly incomprehensible.

Blue Moon celebrates anniversary tonight

Blue Moon Gallery in Hot Springs is celebrating its 15th year in business on May 4 with a recognition of artists who have been with the gallery since 1997: Suzi Dennis of Hot Springs, H. James Hoff of New York and Dallas; Steve Lawnick of Hot Springs; David Rackley of Russellville, Jeanne Teague of Louisiana and Bart Soutendijk of Texas. They'll have new work at the gallery throughout the month of may and some will attend the Gallery Walk reception from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and throughout the month of May.

In honor of its anniversary, the gallery is giving a 15 percent discount on all art sales during May.

So what the heck is sumi-e?

I'm sure everyone who reads Eye Candy knows what sumi-e is, but in case not, here's a succinct definition from Wikipedia:

The goal is not simply to reproduce the appearance of the subject, but to capture its soul. To paint a horse, the ink wash painting artist must understand its temperament better than its muscles and bones. To paint a flower, there is no need to perfectly match its petals and colors, but it is essential to convey its liveliness and fragrance. East Asian ink wash painting may be regarded as an earliest form of expressionistic art that captures the unseen.

Sumi-e paintings by Ann Shedelbower should give you the picture tonight at Blue Moon Fine Art, 718 Central Ave., Hot Springs. The gallery will be open after hours for Gallery Walk, 5-9 p.m.; the artist will be there and will display some of the brushes and tools she uses in her work.

Taylor's Contemporanea: Ingrid Gipson

Ceramic sculpture by German-born artist Ingrid Gipson goes on exhibit today at Taylor's Contemporanea, 204 Exchange St., off Central. The gallery will be open 5-9 p.m. for Hot Springs' monthly Gallery Walk.

Gallery 726 tonight is featuring the work of Teri Levine, an Atlanta artist, art teacher and art therapist. The gallery, at 726 Central Ave., will be open from 5-9 p.m. tonight for Hot Springs' monthly Gallery Walk.

Exhibiting with Levine are visual artists Shirley Anderson, Barbara Seibel, Sue Shields, Caryl Joy Young, Pati Trippel and Gary Weeter; jewelry designer Marlene Gremillion; potter Janet Donnangelo; aluminum sculptor Russell Lemond, glass artists Michael Riley and Charles Riley and wood turner Ken Vonk. The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays in January and February. In March the gallery will also be open on Tuesdays.

Justus Fine Art is highlight new paintings and sculpture by Dolores Justus, Steve Griffith, Robyn Horn and Jennifer Libby Fay and Blue Moon Gallery is continuing its exhibition of minimalist paintings by Megan Chapman, "A Certain Trajectory." Momchilov, House

Justus Fine Art Gallery, 827 A Central Ave. in Hot Springs, is showing photography by Cindy Momchilov and Don House as well as work by other gallery artists in its November exhibit, "Near and Far." The gallery will be open after hours, 5-9 p.m., on Friday, Nov. 4, for the monthly Hot Springs Gallery Walk.

House's series of seven photographs, made with an obsolete Polaroid film, were made to "capture the essence of what makes Fayetteville unique," he's quoted as saying in the gallery news release. Momchilov's photographs were made with a plastic Diana camera. "When I use my Diana cameras no one runs away from me. I look harmless, as well as clueless. It’s easy to make multiple exposures on the same piece of film and the lens has every possible every optical defect. The shutter sounds cheap when it fires and the mechanism for winding the film makes it sound like a toy."

Also featured in the exhibit: Work by Steve Griffith, Donnie Copeland, Rene Hein, Robyn Horn and Dolores Justus. The gallery also has available work by Michael Ashley, Kari Albright, Hugh Dunnahoe, Mike Elsass, Tony Saladino, Rebecca Thompson and others.

Winfred Rembert in Hot Springs

Winfred Rembert, the leather artist who is the subject of the documentary "All Me: The Life and Times of Winfred Rembert," is the featured artist at Taylor's Contemporanea this month. Taylor's will hold a reception from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4, Hot Springs' monthly Gallery Walk Walk.

Rembert creates patterned, and autobiographical, images of the segregated South — cotton pickers, chain-gang workers — in tooled leather. The film was shown in the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival last month. For better images of his work, go the all my eyes blog here.

New pottery by Michael Ashley and paintings by Dolores Justus at Justus Fine Art, 827 Central; glass on copper work by Houston Llew at Gallery Central, 800 Central; paintings by Caryl Joy Young at Gallery 726, 726 Central; raku by Kelly Edwards and wire art by Bart Soutendijk at Blue Moon, 718 Central; mixed media by Lori Arnold at Alison Parsons Galley, and the regulars at American Art Gallery, Taylor's Contemporanea and other venues in the heart of Hot Springs.

Galleries will be open until 9 p.m. and will surely serve cool libations.

Gallery Walk: Tom Richard, Gary Weeter

Tom Richard, a professor of art at the University of Arkansas at Monticello who has exhibited nationally, is the featured artist this month at Blue Moon Gallery in Hot Springs. Tonight is the Spa City's Gallery Walk, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., so catch Richard and his exhibit, "Mr. Frito Lay Explains Color Theory," there, at 718 Central Ave.

Gallery 726 (726 Central) also sent out notice of its new exhibit, watercolors by Hot Springs Village artist, architect and ocean-going art instructor Gary Weeter. Weeter teaches about the Crystal Cruise Line, and his travels provide inspiration for his work. Exhibiting with him are Shirley Anderson, Barbara Seibel, Sue Shields, Caryl Joy Young, Priscilla Cunningham, Trey McCarley, Pati Trippel, Janis Gill Ward, Marlene Gremillion, Charles Riley, Michael Riley and Ken Vonk.

The Fine Arts Center of Hot Springs (626 Central) is showing an exhibit of art inspired by Civil War artifacts. I haven't seen any images from “Civil War — Songs and Correspondences Visualized,” but would like to.

Stop at Justus Fine Art (827 A Central) to see new pastel on suede paintings by Robin Hazard-Bishop, paintings by Dolores Justus, sculpture by Robyn Horn and other work. Artchurch Studio (301 Whittington) is hosting a reception for the "Region 5 Students Exhibition" that will run through March 17, and Rose Eye Clinic is sponsoring a sale of Matisse designer glasses frames at Blue Moon Art Gallery (718 Central). Alison Parsons is working on her "Daily Double" series at her gallery (802 Central Ave.), work she is also showing at K.J.'s Grill, 1834 Airport Road.

Hot Springs galleries are uncorking the wine in preparation for tonight's monthly Gallery Walk downtown. At Dolores Justus Fine Art (827 Central Ave.), see new work from Robin Hazard-Bishop (as in "Bananas," above), Steve Griffith and Justus, along with pottery by Michael Ashley and Kari Albright and other work. Painter Bill Garrison has landscapes at Gallery Central (800 Central Ave.) Nancy Dunaway's paintings inspired by her diagnosis of breast cancer, "More Life Lessons ...," is at Artchurch Studio (301 Whittington Ave.), and Jason Sacran's paintings are on display at Linda Palmer Gallery (800-B Central). Tennessee painter Mike Coulson is the featured artist at Taylor's Contemporanea (204 Exchange St.) for November; get a look at his work tonight from 5-9 p.m., part of the Hot Springs Gallery Walk openings.

Coulson's show is one of several new exhibits galleries have mounted this month. Gallery walkers tonight will see JoAnne Oliver's paintings and works by others at Justus Fine Art (827 A Central Ave.), V.L. Cox's abstracts at Gallery Central (800 Central Ave.), and works by Blue Moon's stable at that gallery (718 Central Ave.), which is having in its annual "Holiday Gifts of Original Art," where paintings, etc., will be for sale for under $300.
