I know of at least five gallery events 5-8 p.m. tonight in Argenta, and there are probably more. Here goes:

Thea Foundation, 401 Main St.: John Sykes Jr., a photojournalist at the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, is showing landscape photographs and digital collages tonight, and Arkansas Symphony string quartet will play. The show runs through Jan. 25.

Greg Thompson Fine Art, 429 Main St.: Thompson celebrates his 18th year in the art business gallery with an anniversary show of work by artists in his stable.

Paint Box Gallery, 705 Main St.: "Flowers in Winter," floral art, is the show.

"Ovolution," 707 N. Main St.: This exhibit of work by women artists will benefit Safe Places. Artists in the show include Tanya Hollifield, Chelsye Garrett, Amanda Heinbockel, Hannah May, Mitchell Crisp, Morgan Hill, Bethanie Newsom Steelman, Mia Hall, Deitra Blackwell, Emily Galusha, Snow, Ally Short, Linda Hollaway, Julia Baugh, Heather Harmon Beckwith, Megan Douglas, Kelly Abernathy, Rachel Trusty, Heather Canterbury, Shannon Wallace, Diane Harper, Leslie Romine, Erin Holliday, Breanna Peterson, Christina Gordon and others; they'll give 30 percent of the proceeds from their sales to the shelter. Audrey Kelly and Megan Choate will provide music tonight. The show continues Saturday.

Starving Artist Studio, 108 Fourth St.: New works by John Watson and Doug Gorrell.

Tonight's the night for the monthly Argenta ArtWalk in downtown NLR and our online calendar lists all the exhibits going on along Main Street from 5-8 p.m.; note the new venues featuring one-night exhibits. Some gallery highlights:

Cheri Peden is showing her newest paintings, rural landscapes, some on ceiling tins, in an exhibit called "A Worn Path: Southern Reflections" at Ketz Gallery, 705 Main St. In a press release, Peden says, "My passion for old family stories, southern history and painting is reflected in my current show, along with the influences of Acadian architecture, vegetable gardens, and New Orleans.” Ketz has work by other known artists as well and will serve up "light refreshments" tonight.

The King Elementary School exhibition of work by third and fourth graders continues at the Thea Foundation and tonight's reception will feature other young artists: the King Elementary jazz band and orchestra. The artists will be at the reception to talk to visitors about their works. Artist Nathan Archie says his drawing (below) was inspired by the work of Jacob Lawrence.

Demonstrating his craft at the Argenta Branch of the Laman Library will be shaker box maker Roger Bartz; his wife, artist Martha Bartz, will also be there.

Next item up: "Best of the South" at Greg Thompson Fine Art.

Jeweler Susan Strauss will show her silver and bead work at tonight's Argenta ArtWalk event at Laman Library's Argenta branch, 506 Main St. She'll be there from 5-8 p.m.

Here's a little something she wrote about her work that I found on the Jewish Federation of Arkansas's webpage on local artists (photos from that site, too):

It's been ten years since I started stringing beads again. I loved beads since I was little and would go over to Sallye Phillips' house and watch her make necklaces fo M.M. Cohn. The bead trend came back and I jumped in.

Over the years, I took my love of making Raku clay and applied it to jewelry making through Precious Metal Clay. This is recycled fine sterling silver in clay form. It works like clay and then when fired, everything that is not clay burns out at the high firing temperature.

More recently, I have begun making things this way in bronze, too. I am learning still to solder and make things in metal through classes at the Arts Center- it is much harder than it looks! The gemstone beads that I currently use are mostly gem quality, faceted stones that make the piece special.

I am lucky to be able to sell my earrings and necklaces on an ongoing basis at The Box Turtle on Kavanaugh.

More jewelry tonight at Argenta ArtWalk: Sheryl Kee of Copper Key Art will be at Ketz Gallery, 705 Main.

Thea Foundation, 401 Main St., NLR, is exhibiting "Metal Art," a show by Carolyn Hendrix and Amanda Wyman; reception is 5:30-8 p.m. tonight during Argenta Artwalk.

Hendrix and Wyman, who met in welding classes at ASU Searcy, form every piece by hand before welding it to "evoke a sense of softness that is not typically associated with metal," they say in Thea's announcement of the show. The exhibit runs through May 4.

The Arkansas Arts Center's "11th National Drawing Invitational," curated by Charlotta Kotik of Brooklyn, features artists who, Kotik says, are a bit obsessive with their line-making (see earlier story here). Kotik invited Reed Anderson (acrylic and ink on cut paper), Dawn Clements (ink and gouache), Ati Maier (ink, airbrush, wood stain), John O'Connor (graphite and colored pencil), Daniel Zeller (graphite, ink, acrylic), Michael Waugh (ink on mylar), Morgan O'Hara (watercolor and pencil), David Kramer (ink, gouache), Il Lee (ballpoint pen) and Karen Schiff (ink, flashe paint and thread).

The works on paper (and mylar) are monumental: Clement's drawing of choreographer Rethorst's living room wraps around two walls; Anderson's acrylic, airbrush, silkscreen and collage on cut paper "Cloud Splitter" is an enormous 111 by 99 inches.

Lisa Krannichfeld, who is known for her drip-technique nudes, will be at Laman Library's Argenta branch tonight for Argenta ArtWalk, 5-8 p.m.

Krannichfeld also works on wood (see above). Here's a quote from her website:

“Two things appear over and over in my work more than anything else — the untainted simplicity of line and the focus on the human experience. One illustrates the other. Whether it be a thick black line of charcoal, the stringy drizzle of paint, or the grain of wood, the element of line above all is what I find most beautiful.”

Four Arkansas League of Artist members will demonstrate their various techniques at Thea Foundation, 401 Main St., tonight for Argenta ArtWalk, 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Artists Melanie Johnston (Japanese wood block), John Wooldridge (oil painting), Mary Ann Stafford (pastel) and Kateri Joe (mixed medium) will also have art for sale. Local band the Pickoids will provide entertainment.

In keeping with Ketz's African theme (see earlier post), I thought I'd post the above example of Johnston's woodcuts, taken from her Etsy site, above. An example of Kateri Joe's work is here:

I've already gotten word from one gallery-goer that the exhibition of 40 vintage Disfarmer photographs at Greg Thompson Fine Art is a must-do. Argenta ArtWalk reception for the show, "Disfarmer: Prints from a Lifetime," is tonight from 6-8 p.m. (note: an hour start later than other ArtWalk venues).

Jennifer Carman, a Little Rock art appraiser, is both curator and sponsor; the works are for sale. She'll give a talk about the work and screen the biopic "Disfarmer: A Portrait of America" later in April.

Mike Disfarmer was a Heber Springs misanthrope and photographer; his straight-on, unadorned studio shots of Cleburne County folk at the early part of the 20th century blew up a few years ago in New York galleries.

"All Things Wild" is the name of Caren Garner's exhibition of her paintings of African wildlife, opening tonight at Ketz Gallery, 705 Main St. The Argenta ArtWalk reception is 5-8 p.m.

Garner has been experimenting with water media and collage, a news release from Ketz says. Garner is a member of the Arkansas League of Artists and the Mid-Southern Watercolorists.

Ketz will also show works in all media by other gallery artists and Peggy Roberson, who is represented by Ketz, is showing her work tonight at Blake's Furniture at 3rd and Main.
