DAVE MATTHEWS.
  • DAVE MATTHEWS.

Better be busy whittlin' or have that lathe spinning. The Rock Candy 500 pinewood derby is just around the corner. On Thursday, April 9, from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m., we'll race homemade derby cars on a 40-foot track on loan from the Boy Scouts. Prizes will be awarded for speed, paint, design, best kid's entry (under 14) and best of show. The entry fee is $8 in advance or $10 the day of the race. You'll find an entry form on page 14 of this issue. All proceeds benefit Boy Scout Troop 5, chartered by Easter Seals Arkansas. Find a complete list of rules, addresses and phone numbers for local outlets to buy derby kits and more on Rock Candy.

Somewhat surprisingly, there are still some 1,500 tickets available for the September 29 Dave Matthews Band concert at Dickey-Stephens, via the Travs' box office, according to general manager Pete Laven. Tickets are $55-$65.

The Coen brothers have bumped their adaptation of Charles Portis' “True Grit” into the batter's box, ahead of projects like an adaptation of Michael Chabon's “Yiddish Policemen's Union.”

Arkansas film commissioner Christopher Crane says the brothers haven't decided where they're filming and that Arkansas could be in the running if the Arkansas film incentive packag, is signed into law.

Now that the state legislature has officially deemed a stretch of US 67 as “Rock ‘n' Roll Highway 67,” it's time for the ledge to move on to other insignificant-but-fun-to-talk-about matters. Namely, following Oklahoma's lead and designating an official “rock song” for Arkansas. The Flaming Lips' “Do You Realize?” recently earned that title in Oklahoma.

I've gotten the ball rolling online and nominated Black Oak Arkansas's “Hot and Nasty.” Join in on the blog.

Watch “Dear Daniel,” the new stop-motion music video from the Good Fear. The band's lead singer Zach Holland teamed with local photographer Rett Peek to produce it.
