It's a sad commentary that two people connected to Arkansas have made disgusting remarks in the past two weeks about assassination. Both are politicians who knew exactly what they were saying, maybe depending on the power of suggestion. It's embarrassing that Arkansas like West Virginia is so out of step with the rest of the nation. It's time for us to come together as Americans and end this war between Republicans and Democrats for the good of our country.

As a former resident of Arkansas, I am extremely disappointed in former Gov. Mike Huckabee's remarks to the NRA regarding Sen. Barack Obama.

I cannot believe that Huckabee calls himself a minister and tells Tim Russert on Meet the Press that everyone makes comments they don't mean.

Thank goodness he didn't become the Republican nominee. Apparently he talks out of both sides of his mouth. He owes Senator Obama a formal apology and I hope he has the decency and the integrity to find it in himself to do so.

If Huckabee gets nominated as McCain's running mate, I hope this country remembers this comment. It was a racist comment in my opinion.

Live music a hit

Lindsey Millar's account of the Foxboro Hot Tub's performance at Juanita's was pretty accurate. Juanita's was electrified with a very receptive crowd. I suspect that more than the few people Lindsey tabulated were familiar with Smoke Up Johnny prior to their typically fuel-injected performance that set the perfect tone for the evening.

Since I have written my share of reviews myself, I would have used this occasion as a perfect soapbox opportunity to ask this legitimate question: Why aren't crowds this supportive of live music all the time? In fact, in 1993, the band Green Day performed to a crowd that was not even half the size of this crowd that packed the house on Tuesday night.

The other thing that Millar neglected to do is thank Juanita's. The club and James Snyder did a fantastic job of managing the crowds and accommodating this special event. They definitely contributed to this being one great night of music.

A proud Republican

You guys are up to your usual stereo typing in that child-like section called “The Observer.”

I am a Republican who uses the green bags, the new light bulbs, leaves the thermostat down in winter and up in summer. I am pro-choice and overall pro-green. When my aging, paid-for Explorer gives up the ghost, I will opt for a greener vehicle. I believe in freedom of speech, even when it irks me. I honk at people who litter and speed and run red lights. I believe corporate greed is at least partially responsible for the fuel and medical bill problems everybody faces today. I believe the Iraq war was ill advised at best

I also believe illegal aliens are “illegal” and are also helping us use up our limited resources. They are surely driving down real U.S. citizen's wages. I believe that affirmative action is unconstitutional and belittles the very people it would help. I believe that taxing people more because they spend their entire life working very hard and then giving their very hard-earned wages to people who don't know how to do work is extremely unproductive and overall a mean and jealous behavior. These are the beliefs that make me Republican.

I don't believe that the liberal side of the Democratic house has had a new idea since the '60s, when I was a Democrat. Good luck with Obama. He is a dammed fool. If he loses this election, maybe a spot will open up for him on the LRSD school board, where damned fools are currently destroying what little is left of the Little Rock public schools.

Police harassment

Instead of working on the tremendous drug and crime problems in Saline County, the Saline County sheriff's office is busy harassing motorists on Highway 70 between Benton and Hot Springs.

Last week, taking back roads to Hot Springs, I was turning west on U.S. 70 just west of I-30, when a sheriff's car parked on the opposite side suddenly backed up and pulled out right behind me. I became cautious, holding my speed around 50 so he could pass. After staying right behind me for approximately 3 miles, he stopped me and issued a warning ticket for “impeding traffic flow.” The deputy, David Blevins, was actually “impeding.” Although he had ample opportunity, he wouldn't pass, and of course no one would pass his police car. If he had passed, traffic flow would have returned to normal.

It appears he's “profiling” certain types of cars. I doubt it was me, since I'm 65 years old and disabled, but I was driving a sports car. This road has no minimum speed posted, and with the tourist, boat-towing, RVs, Oaklawn horse trailers and truck traffic, many vehicles travel below the speed limit. This highway is a “scenic drive” according to Michelin's.

  • Outsourcing state government

As a citizen, I don't get to choose not to pay taxes because I don't like what the Arkansas state government is spending state and federal money on, such as paying a Chinese company, Sun Paper, approximately $1 billion to build a paper mill in Clark County.
