  • Religion as excuse upends Constitution

Tirades over religious liberty since the U.S. Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriages nationwide have awakened the ghost of James Madison, the author of the constitutional doctrine on the matter, and it isn't happy that his effort to protect religious inquiry in America is being corrupted.

Re: “NRA executive director: Goal is guns everywhere, with no training mandate

Almost every gun illegally used by a criminal, was legally manufactured, legally sold, and at some point through neglect or criminal intent, came into possession of a criminal, or worse a child. What is so wrong about actually holding the manufacturers and gun owners responsible? You know, like the gun laws they have in Israel?

Re: “Tribal loathing

Or as I often say, the extremes from both sides want to take away our freedoms. They just use different excuses and methods.

Re: “Never his fault

For anyone who has had to deal with a chronic liar as a co-worker, client, boss or spouse, the challenge is always at what point do you find a way to terminate the toxic relationship.

Re: “Repeal Obamacare: The GOP crusade was just a charade

Our health care system is another example of political rhetoric running into the reality of human nature. Without mandatory FICA withholding, your typical young worker would not have the planning and self discipline to save for his basic retirement needs. Healthcare is another example. Which is why we need a variation of single payer, or at least mandatory withholding for health insurance. It also levels the competitive advantage of employers who do not have the expense of workplace health insurance.

Re: “Highway bill stymied again

Typical Republican politician logic. Privatize the costs and risks for real people. Socialize the costs for corporate persons. Better yet, let anything involving the common good deteriorate until it becomes someone else's problem.

Re: “NRA executive director: Goal is guns everywhere, with no training mandate

Notice how the NRA is not big about personal responsibility for safe maintenance, operation and storage? If more guns make you safer, why are war zones the most dangerous places in the world? it may be a coincidence, the the Second Amendment gun nut takeover of the NRA happened right after we eliminated the military draft. FYI, I had 26 years in the Army, starting in 1971.

Re: “No love for pit bulls

In my opinion dangerous dogs are the product of neglect and abuse. Some people should not be allowed to be responsible for dogs, let alone children. It has been my personal experience that the same people are also very sloppy about safely securing any weapons they own.
