For the young and old

Arkansas’s best doctors 2009: Pediatricians to pulmonologists.

FOR THE YOUNG AND OLD: Results from this year's Best Doctors in Arkansas survey.
  • FOR THE YOUNG AND OLD: Results from this year's Best Doctors in Arkansas survey.

We've done it again. Since 1995, the Arkansas Times has published a yearly list of what we call the Best Doctors in Arkansas. This year, the 15th time around, our survey has produced the most wide-ranging list ever, from family practice docs to brain surgeons.

The doctors listed here were nominated by their peers, all licensed Arkansas physicians who were invited to vote either on-line or through the mail. Hundreds voted. (Dozens voted twice — but we caught you!)

The Times does not declare the list below to be the be-all, end-all list of Arkansas's best doctors. It's heavy on physicians at the University of Arkansas for Medical Science, and several of those doctors will tell you that's because their colleagues in private practice are their former students and paying their respects.

That's what Dr. Paula Anderson modestly chalked up her nomination to. The pulmonologist has been at UAMS since 1969, teaching and seeing patients with all kinds of lung disease. But Anderson is known nationally for her work with adults with cystic fibrosis, a patient group that barely existed before aerosol and other improvements in CF therapies, as her profile in this issue explains.

Pediatrician Dr. Joe Elser also carved out a niche, creating Arkansas Children's Hospital's migraine clinic, treating an ailment that is far commoner in kids than many realize — but rarer in clinical focus. Dr. Brian Hardin works with Elser's “graduates” — adolescents, whose unique psychosocial and musculoskeletal needs require a special medical approach.

We revisit Dr. Kris Shewmake, who was named best plastic surgeon a decade ago, to see what's new in his specialty. What's new in his life: His surgical mission trips, teaching advanced techniques to doctors in Honduras.

Joining Anderson, Elser, Hardin and Shewmake as nominees for “best” are the doctors listed below. Hometowns are given for doctors who practice outside Pulaski County.

  • Rapert compares Bill Clinton to Orval Faubus

Sen. Jason Rapert (R-Conway)  was on "Capitol View" on KARK, Channel 4, this morning, and among other things that will likely inspire you to yell at your computer screen, he said he expects someone in the legislature to file a bill to do ... something about changing the name of the Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport.
  • Fake news

So fed up was young Edgar Welch of Salisbury, N.C., that Hillary Clinton was getting away with running a child-sex ring that he grabbed a couple of guns last Sunday, drove 360 miles to the Comet Ping Pong pizzeria in Washington, D.C., where Clinton was supposed to be holding the kids as sex slaves, and fired his AR-15 into the floor to clear the joint of pizza cravers and conduct his own investigation of the pedophilia syndicate of the former first lady, U.S. senator and secretary of state.
  • Reality TV prez

There is almost nothing real about "reality TV." All but the dullest viewers understand that the dramatic twists and turns on shows like "The Bachelor" or "Celebrity Apprentice" are scripted in advance. More or less like professional wrestling, Donald Trump's previous claim to fame.
