Hillcrest Dining Guide

Located between downtown and midtown, Hillcrest has a laidback approach to life. When it comes to dining, local chefs take their offerings seriously. Whether you're looking for a slice of pizza and a beer, French-inspired seafood or Cuban black bean soup, Hillcrest is the place for you.

AMERICAN

ACADIA
A jewel of a restaurant. Wonderful soups and fish dishes. Extensive wine list. On Mondays and Tuesday get three courses for the fixed price of $23.50. It's a bargain. 3000 Kavanaugh Blvd. 603-9630

FERNEAU
Great seafood, among other things, is served at this neighborhood spot featuring popular chef Donnie Ferneau. 2601 Kavanaugh Blvd. 603-9208

SO RESTAURANT BAR
A charming upscale restaurant and bar located in the Hillcrest neighborhood. Offerings range from salads and sandwiches to a four-course meal featuring seafood specialties. Large deck for al fresco dining and brunch on Sunday. 3610 Kavanaugh Blvd. 663-1464

THE HOUSE
Delicious, gourmet burgers and sandwiches are served at this neighborhood gathering spot. Cheap beer and good coffee, too. Enjoy the quiet and relaxed setting. 722 N. Palm St. 663-4500

VIEUX CARRE
In New Orleans, Vieux Carre is used interchangeably with "French Quarter," and was chosen as the name for this restaurant because it reflects the eclectic cuisine of that city—Cajun and Creole to French, Italian, Southwest and just plain Southern. Come hungry. Don't forget to save room for the chocolate crème brulèe. Great Sunday jazz brunch. 2721 Kavanaugh Blvd. 663-1196

EUROPEAN/ETHNIC

CAFE BOSSA NOVA
A South American approach to sandwiches, salads and desserts, all quite good, as well as an array of refreshing teas and coffees. Great brunch on Sunday. 2701 Kavanaugh Blvd. 614-6682

CIAO BACI
The focus is on fine dining in this casually elegant Hillcrest bungalow, and many come for the comfortable lounge that serves specialty drinks until 2 a.m. nightly. 605 N. Beechwood St. 603-0238

LEO'S GREEK CASTLE
Wonderful Mediterranean food—gyros or platters, falafel and tabouleh—plus dependable hamburgers, ham sandwiches, steak platters and BLTs. Great breakfast spot. Small and casual. 2925 Kavanaugh Blvd. 666-7414

ITALIAN

DAMGOODE PIES
A somewhat different Italian/pizza place, largely because of the spicy garlic white sauce that's offered as an alternative to the traditional red sauce. Good bread, too. Delivery available. 2701 Kavanaugh Blvd. 664-2239. 10720 Rodney Parham Rd. – take and delivery only

U.S. PIZZA
Crispy thin-crust pizzas, frosty beers and heaping salads drowned in creamy dressing. 2710 Kavanaugh Blvd. 663-2198

MEXICAN

CANON GRILL
Pronounce it canyon grill, and order the creative and tasty appetizers or from the varied main course list. 2811 Kavanaugh Blvd. 664-2068
