I'm sorry we stood by while your generation's hope was smothered by $1.3 trillion in student loan debt, just because you were trying to educate yourselves enough to avoid falling for the snake oil and big talk of a fascist.

Re: “Senate approves school voucher bill

Did Jim Hendren really say that 1% of 100 students would be 10 students?!?

Re: “Halfway home with the Arkansas legislature

HB 1222, sending public money to private schools: My representative says the bill's author says no public money, just a private charity. That's sort of true. People can give to education savings funds at a private charity, and get a tax credit for it.

You could send the money for your whole state tax bill to private schools.

How could the legislature even write a budget, if people get to choose whether to pay their taxes or to send the money directly to a private school?

Re: “Steve Womack hearing from constituents, sounds a little grouchy

I was in the crowd outside. I arrived fifteen minutes early, parked a few blocks away on the other side of the railroad tracks, walked over to city hall and learned that I would not be allowed to take my purse into the meeting. Back to car, leave purse. Back to city hall. Mashed my way through crowd to the door of meeting room, handed 30 or 40 daffodils to somebody, asked him to take one and pass them on. Went back to foyer. Womack started talking early but we outside the room could not hear him. Eventually a police officer asked him if he would come out to the parking lot to talk to us; he said no. Fire code required that we go outside; I counted 130 people, I believe all of them critics of Womack/Trump, out in the cold drizzle. It was an opportunity to get acquainted with each other and we did so.

Re: “Meeting set Sept. 13 on Capitol monuments

I'd like to second the proposal to honor the Flying Spaghetti Monster. The monument could also house a food shelf for people who our Republican leaders have made even poorer.

Re: “Hillary Clinton: an inspiration

I've shared this column and it evokes heartfelt responses from so many people - a woman who wasn't allowed to enroll in engineering school because men needed all the slots; a man whose wife could not get a library card in her own name. Yes, Hillary is inspirational, because so many of us share her history and see her perseverance and her progress, and her work for us. Thank you, Autumn Tolbert.

Re: “Chinese plan $1.36 billion pulp mill in South Arkansas; incentives not yet known

I am told that the long-term contract between Koch and Plum Creek expired about six years ago.
