It was a good week for …

RIVERFEST. The annual party drew more than 250,000 and, apart from massive traffic jams at closing time, seems to have gone off with few hitches.

EDUCATION. A record 873 state prison inmates were awarded GED diplomas in a ceremony at the Cummins Unit.

DOUBLE DIPPING. Deborah Schwartz, who got a $153,000 golden parachute from her job as Little Rock National Airport director, will use her paid free time to get a $35,000 30-day consulting contract for the North Little Rock Municipal Airport.

It was a bad week for …

A WEDDING. The bride, groom and two others were wounded when a gunman opened fire on an outdoor wedding beside Piney Creek in rural Pope County. The gunman apparently was enraged because the groom's dog got in a fight with his dog. Members of the wedding party chased down the gunman at a Russellville restaurant drive-through.

TOUCH-SCREEN VOTING MA-CHINES. Another election, another screw-up, this one on the House District 45 race in Conway. A recount caught the error and reversed the outcome announced election night, giving a victory to Linda Tyler over Terry Fiddler.

MOTORISTS. Gasoline hit $4 per gallon for premium and regular is headed in that direction.

NORTH LITTLE ROCK. It's set to waste $60,000 in tax money and untold amounts of police officer time testing a remote-controlled helicopter for future police surveillance work, even though the Federal Aviation Administration seems unlikely to approve its use over populated areas. The NLR cops already spend huge amounts of time trolling for Internet predators in other states. They hardly need another excuse to subtract from street time.

GOV. MIKE BEEBE. Through his Higher Education director, he ordered state colleges to put an end to providing in-state tuition to all Arkansas high school graduates. Arkansas residents who can't also prove legal U.S. residency will be shafted.
