Last week, at a rally to oppose same-sex marriage on the steps of the U.S. Capitol, Mike Huckabee gave a profoundly stupid and offensive speech. Expropriating sections of Martin Luther King's Letter from a Birmingham Jail on "just" and "unjust" laws, Huckabee compared opposing same-sex marriage to taking a stand against the Nazis. He also decried the judicial system's role in interpreting law. "The government doesn't give us our rights," he said. "The government only has the responsibility to protect the rights God gave us."
If you're surprised by Huckabee's extreme posturing, then you haven't been following along. He's vomited up crazy, bigoted things for years. Below, a sampling of the best of the worst.
"I'm beginning to think there's more freedom in North Korea sometimes than there is in the United States."
Bitching about airport security before the New Hampshire Freedom Summit in April 2014.
"If the Democrats want to insult the women of America by making them believe that they are helpless without Uncle Sugar coming in and providing for them a prescription each month for birth control because they cannot control their libido or their reproductive system without the help of the government, then so be it."
Speaking before a meeting of Republican National Committee members in January 2014.
"Trayvon Martin is not a hero. He was a young man whose life ended way too soon maybe because he decided to confront a man he believed was showing him disrespect."
On his Fox News show in July 2013
"[Some of my opponents] do not want to change the Constitution, but I believe it's a lot easier to change the Constitution than it would be to change the word of the living God, and that's what we need to do is to amend the Constitution so it's in God's standards rather than try to change God's standards."
Appealing to Republican primary voters in Michigan in 2008.
"[Gospel Singer] Ethel Waters, for example, was the result of a forcible rape. I used to work for James Robison back in the 1970s, he leads a large Christian organization. He, himself, was the result of a forcible rape. And so I know it happens, and yet even from those horrible, horrible tragedies of rape, which are inexcusable and indefensible, life has come and sometimes, you know, those people are able to do extraordinary things."
Speaking on his radio show in August 2012, on why getting pregnant after a rape isn't necessarily a bad thing.
"It is now difficult to keep track of the vast array of publicly endorsed and institutionally supported aberrations — from homosexuality and pedophilia to sadomasochism and necrophilia."
Putting homosexuals in the same boat as necrophiliacs in his 1998 book "Kids Who Kill."
"It is difficult to understand the public policy towards AIDS. It is the first time in the history of civilization in which the carriers of a genuine plague have not been isolated from the general population, and in which this deadly disease for which there is no cure is being treated as a civil rights issue instead of the true health crisis it represents." In 1992, responding to a question about the AIDS crisis posed by the AP to him and his opponent during his unsuccessful run for Senate.
