It was a GOOD week for …
U.S. REPS. VIC SNYDER and MARION BERRY. They joined a narrow majority approving historic legislation to expand health coverage of American citizens.
The STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION, which, for once, demonstrated reluctance to approve charter school applications where clear demonstrations of unmet needs weren't offered. That proper standard has not always been applied by the board, particularly on Pulaski County applications.
JAY CAMPBELL. The state Supreme Court ordered a new trial for the former Lonoke police chief, convicted of being in cahoots with burglars and dopers. The court said his trial was tainted by unsupported allegations of gang activity and testimony about his wife's sexual activities with city jail prisoners.
GOV. MIKE BEEBE. During an event encouraging adoption, the governor reiterated that he opposed the initiated act approved by voters in 2008 to bar adoption by gay couples and said he would vote against it again if given the chance. Though he will not likely have such an opportunity, the sentiment was still welcome.

STATE FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT. In a year of budget cuts and declining tax revenue, the state added more than 1,200 jobs.
CENTRAL ARKANSAS WATER RATEPAYERS. They'll help pay more than $12 million to buy Lake Maumelle watershed acreage land from bankrupt developer Jay DeHaven, who bought the land out of foreclosure for less than $5 million. A complicated subsequent flip of the land involving DeHaven apparently was the basis for a much higher appraisal on which the water utility acted.
BERNIE COX. The long-time football coach at Little Rock Central High School ended a long, generally successful career on a decidedly sour note. Without talking to the press, he closed out the second of two consecutive winless seasons at Central with a scoreless trouncing of the once mighty Tigers by Bryant. The storied program imploded, somewhat mysteriously.
