Re: “Curtis Vance's lawyer defends trial system

I will direct my final comment to Mr James: I presume you are a Christian - place yourself in the position of the VICTIM the next time you are in court, and "do unto others as you would have them do unto you". Then read "Myself", by Edgar Guest. May our paths never cross again.

Re: “Curtis Vance's lawyer defends trial system

@Tap - Mr James is a cluprit, and an accessory to a rape victim not getting justice. He has to live with that, and from his article I would say that he struggles with that portion of his job. This client will not yet walk the streets (appeal pending, so he might), but how many people has he known to be guilty of crimes like rape, murder, child abuse and put back on the streets by his tactics. Mr James is very good at manipulating facts and peoples doubts, but truly seeing justice done is not part of his job description - too bad.

Re: “Curtis Vance's lawyer defends trial system

Mr James is a good defense lawyer, which can be bad for "justice". Lady Justice carries her scale with a blindfold on; Mr James plays to suspicion and ignorance, or maybe whatever it takes to "not lose". Vance was not acquitted. Mr James did admit that Ms Edwards was raped (in his closing argument) - at least some consolation prize to a woman who was raped and threatened with death? And the evidence wasn't 1,000,000,000:1, it was 10 billion times as good - 10,000,000,000,000,000,000:1 and wasn't just found on her clothes - - -. We seem to forget that another man (also black) who was originally under suspicion in this case was removed from consideration by that same DNA.
Our justice system is imperfect, but if we don't talk about what is broken we can never hope to fix it! Helping guilty people avoid conviction is not "justice", it is "using the justice system" to win, regardless of its impact on the victim or society.

Re: “Lee County justice: the mistrial of Curtis Vance

@Zatharus - "manufacturing evidence"? The evidence was created by God, and placed there by a man, to be analyzed by scientific instruments. That evidence REMOVED a black man from suspicion in this crime, and later placed it on the rapist. Unfortunately, as long as there are people who believe like you, "we can expect little to be done".
And I agree with Norma - thanks to Mr. Koon & the Times for addressing a P.C. subject with objectivity and sensitivity.

Re: “For the defense

@Martin Balsam - not everything reported in the papers is true, and not everything is reported in the paper. If you weren't in the courtroom, or have the transcript, I suggest you don't make assumptions about what was or wasn't said. Mr James lied in his arguments, and I'd face him in both the court of law AND of God

Re: “Lee County justice: the mistrial of Curtis Vance

Mr long stated that the other case was "around two trillion to one". That's 2,000,000,000,000:1 and this case was 10,000,000,000,000,000,000:1 or FIVE MILLION TIMES AS CERTAIN. Guilty, beyond ANY REASONABLE doubt.
Hats off to the courage of the juror who would speak up, and to the victim for her strength throughout this ordeal.

Re: “For the defense

Mr. James says that there were "juror strikes" left for the prosecution. Why doesn't Mr. James mention that he used his multiple (at least five) peremptory challenges to keep educated whites off the jury, while Mr Long only used his to remove two blacks (who knew the victim or witnesses)? Tell the truth, Mr. James, the whole truth. Don't blame the prosecution for the actions of the jury.
